Yes, I Like Going Home and Here's Why

And how lucky I am to have a home that makes leaving so hard.

Yes, I Like Going Home and Here's Why
Mackenzie Cook

Yep, you read it right. I'm a junior in college and not only do I go home quite often, but I actually like going home. Now let's be honest, most college kids can't stand going home once they get to college. They love the freedom and having their own home away from home. Don't get me wrong, I love those things too but I also love the things about being home. I love going home. I've liked going home since I was a freshman, and I'm pretty sure I'll always love it. Will anything ever be able to take it's place, even when I get a home of my own someday? There's a ton of reasons why I go home so much, but it's the simplest of things that keep me going back almost every weekend.

1. My family

College life is great and all, but sometimes you just want or need your family. Sometimes you just need your mom or your annoying little brother and sometimes anyone that's breathing in your family will do. Nothing can replace the comfort of home and family. It's mainly that warm, comforting feeling you get when you're with your family that makes going home so special. Like I said before, there are times you suddenly miss that annoying presence of your little brother when you once thought you couldn't wait to be as far away from him as possible . I have three younger siblings and being able to act silly and goofy with them makes me miss home so much. My younger siblings keep everyone in the house young and feeling like I'm missing out on that makes me miss home the most.

2. My mom's cooking

Not to be dramatic or anything, but I would literally travel cross country for my mom's cooking. No joke. It literally gives me life. Here's the thing, if you've had a bad week, there is no better cure than a home cooked meal. There's just something about your mother's cooking in general, but my mom's cooking is honestly worthy of a cookbook or restaurant or something! Every time I go home my mom asks me what I want her to cook and not only does she cook what I request, but she does it 100000x better than I could have ever imagined it to be. She has always added her own twists to dishes. The weird thing is, she rarely uses a recipe and if she does, it's merely a baseline for whatever delicious creation ends up on the plate.

3. My dogs at home

I have dogs of my own that come to school with me, but there's just something about your dogs at home that you miss so much. My dogs love playing with my family dogs when we're home. They all have a special bond and I know they miss each other when they're not together. I know for a fact that my dogs miss home and look forward to going back just as much as I do.

4. My hometown

I love my hometown. I've lived in Suwanee, Georgia all my life so it's home to me and always will be. What's even cooler is my mom was also raised there so I have an even stronger connection to it. Bottom line, Suwanee is the bomb.com.

5. My actual house

I love my house. It's not the house I was raised in because we moved my freshman year of college, but it's still my house and I love it just the same. Within the last two years, my mom and I have probably gone to At Home and TJ Maxx & HomeGoods a thousand times since we moved. My furniture and decorations in Athens are super cute, because my mom wanted me to feel just as "at home" but there's just something about the furniture and decorations back home that make me miss it so much more. Even the little things, like that one specific chair in the family room that feels like THE comfiest chair in the world. Or the backyard that my dogs and I love so much. At the end of the day, no matter where in the world you are, there's really NO place like home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
