The world is a beautiful place.

How Traveling Has Changed My Life
CNBC

I grew up in a town of 800 people. Most people would think that growing up in a town that small I haven’t “gotten out much”. I have been lucky enough to have been given multiple opportunities to travel a lot of different places. Because of this it has opened my mind up to see the differences among people.

In 20 years of my life I have been seen more than a lot of people have in their entire life. Some of the things I have seen were beautiful and some of them were not. But in their entirety they have shown me how different things are for different people. From seeing homeless people fighting for their every meal in Hawaii, to seeing beautiful castles in Germany. It is amazing how different people’s lives are.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved growing up in a small town and everyone in it but I also love getting to travel to different places. It’s easy to forget how much is really a part of our world. Especially while you are living in a town where everyone knows you, and knows everything about you. When you get into a daily routine you don’t see the how much some people really struggle through their lives. However, when you do see the things other people have to go through it really makes you count your blessings.

Traveling gives you the opportunity to see and experience things that are out of your comfort zone. Getting out of your comfort zone gives you more experiences that in turn expands your view on things. I have gotten the opportunity to learn more things about the world around us than some people ever will. I have learned so much just from traveling, I have seen some of the most beautiful things that exist in our world.

Some people can’t travel due to the expenses of it, but I can honestly say that traveling is worth way more than money can buy. You can’t put a price on the view of looking over the Swiss alps, or driving on the road to Hana in Hawaii. People forget how beautiful our world really is. A lot of people take this for granted, I have learned that some people aren’t as lucky as I am, and don’t get these opportunities.

Some of my best experiences have come from traveling. I have learned more from traveling than I have from going to school. Getting out and actually experiencing some of the things that exist in our world is worth way more than talking about it in a class room. However, it is cool to be able to relate things I have learned in school to things I have learned while traveling. Traveling has opened my mind up to more things that I could never learned in school. It has shown me that there is more to our world than living in my small town in Iowa. It has shown me how lucky I am to have the life I do, where I don’t have to struggle to achieve my daily necessities.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
