"Are you hurting and broken within? Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin? Jesus is calling..."
Those are the beginning lyrics to one of my favorite songs, "O Come to the Altar" by Elevation Worship.
You may have clicked on this article because you are hurting in some way or another. Maybe you're anxious, you don't know what tomorrow holds, someone who is experiencing the sour betrayal of a friend, a teenager who is feeling the bitter pain of a breakup, a Christian who is struggling in their walk with God, someone who doesn't have a good relationship with their mother and/or father, whatever your case may be, I hope and pray that this article will encourage you and hopefully lift up your wounded spirit.
As human beings, we all experience pain of some sort. There's just no way around that. Like Augustus Waters says in John Green's "The Fault In Our Stars," "Pain demands to be felt."
However, the pain we feel is one of the many things that make us human. We feel pain because we are flesh and blood.
One thing that is important to remember is that Jesus felt pain when He was also in His flesh.
In fact, he even carried the weight of not just physical pain, but depression, anxiety and betrayal just for us. He was willing to do that just for us because He loved us.
In the midst of our sorrow, depression, disappointment, anxiety, etc., Jesus feels those emotions with us and the beautiful thing is that he wants to heal us from those things.
He wants us to put our trust in Him to take our pain away. He isn't sitting in the sky judging us like a lot of people think.
This reminds me of a lyric from Owl City's song "You're Not Alone" which says, "You smile when you hear my prayer."
If you feel like God has abandoned you, Jesus felt the same way when His pierced and shredded body was nailed to a cross. Matthew 27:46 says,
"About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ElÃ, ElÃ, lemá sabachtáni?" That is, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" (CSB version)
If you're dealing with being bullied, remember that even before His death, Jesus too was often ridiculed and mocked by people. Isaiah 53:3 tells us,
"He was despised and rejected by men.."
He was even mocked by Herod and his soldiers when He faces Pilate in Luke 23.
If you're struggling with anxiety, Jesus was also anxious the night that he was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Bible tells us that anxious and heavy laden that He began to sweat blood.
Lastly, I've experienced friendship betrayal, and it hurt. A lot. It happens.
People change and sometimes turn against you. Jesus experienced this with Peter and Judas. Peter denied Jesus three times when asked about Him, and Judas betrayed Jesus for a bribe of thirty pieces of silver.
Jesus understands and feels our pain with us. He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. (Even a sister!)
As I said earlier, he hears us and loves us deeply. His love for us runs so deep that he was willing to take a harsh punishment that we were all deserving of. So keep that in mind when you're in pain and you feel like you can't turn to anyone.
