The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a web series created by Hank Green and Bernie Su, is excellent at adapting the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen into modern times. Here's why.
1) It's multimedia
Sure, it centers around the Youtube series, but there are also Twitter accounts for each character, and two books. One is Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet, which details her thoughts which we don't get to see on her video blog. The other, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet, describes Lizzie's younger sister Lydia's life after the events of LBD.
2) Lydia Bennet is a lot more likable
Unlike Pride and Prejudice, Lydia is made a more sympathetic character in this video series. We see that all she wants is to be loved by Jane and Lizzie, and on her Youtube channel, it's obvious that she's projecting her feelings onto her chill cousin Mary.
3) The Georgiana character is given a lot more agency
In this version, Georgiana Darcy is known as Gigi, a college student working part-time as a web designer for Pemberly Digital. She also has a huge role in bringing George Wickham to justice and helping Lydia, since he did the same thing to her. It's awesome to see Gigi take charge in taking down her former abuser and not just relying on her older brother.
4) They translate regency-era England problems to twenty-first century America problems really well
Rather than a marriage proposal, Mr. Collins offers Lizzie a chance to be his business partner at his media company. As a modern day audience, we find it easy to say that you shouldn't marry unless you're in love. However, someone offering you a job in your field, possibly helping you get out of debt, is something most people can relate to in this world. And unlike a marriage proposal, that's really hard to say no to today.
5) They add diversity
Bing and Caroline Lee (the newcomers) are both of Asian descent. So are Charlotte, Lizzie's best friend, and Charlotte's little sister Maria. Darcy's best friend (besides Bing), Fitz, is black and gay.
6) We're given the point of view of more than one character
Lizzie's channel is the main one, but Lydia, Maria Lu, and Gigi each have channels of their own too.
7) It's slow burn...really slow burn.
We don't even get to see Lizzie and her love interest, William Darcy interact until 60 episodes into the series. The show relies on costume theater so we do get to see what happens from Lizzie's perspective.
8) It's well-acted
You can feel Jane's pain when she says the "I made you snickerdoodles" part. You want to reach out and give Lydia a hug after George manipulates her into not confiding in Jane or anyone from her family. In fact, LBD won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Interactive Program.
9) It's hilarious
Mary and Lydia in particular play really well off each other.
10) It has a really empowering message for women
Lizzie, Jane, and Charlotte find career success in female-empowering ways.
