Kavanaugh Was Sworn In Because Of His Political Affiliation, Not Because Of His 'Character'

The Supreme Court is supposed to be nonpartisan, but the judges tend to represent the same views as the president that appointed them.

A huge headline in the news recently has definitely been the Kavanaugh hearing and decision on whether he is to join the Supreme Court. The whole country watched as survivors Christine Blasey Ford, Deborah Ramirez, and Julie Swetnick share their stories about the Supreme Court nominee. Regardless of how moving their testimonies were, it was declared on October 6th, 2018, that Kavanaugh is to be sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice. This vote of 50-48 was extremely close which shows how dividing the issue has been.

Protests in Washington D.C. have broken out representing both sides of the issue. Some throw their support towards Kavanaugh. They believe that the accusations are fake and are merely a democratic witch hunt ploy to prevent Kavanaugh from becoming a Supreme Court justice. The others rally behind the victims of Kavanaugh by believing their stories and supporting them.

In my opinion, the decision is based on political party and not on the character of Kavanaugh. The roles of a Supreme Court judge is extremely important because the decisions made by the Supreme Court set precedent for future decisions and the job is a lifelong position. The Supreme Court is supposed to be nonpartisan, but the judges tend to represent the same views as the president that appointed them. With Kavanaugh in the position, the Supreme Court becomes more conservative with their decisions.

I am extremely disappointed in the decision made. Dr. Ford had to relive a memory that haunts her forever in front of the whole country only to have her attacker become a Supreme Court justice. When decisions like this are made, it makes it more difficult for people who experienced sexual assault or abuse to come out and talk because they see attackers, like Kavanaugh, get away with no repercussions. Regardless of the decision, I still support and believe Dr. Ford and the other women.

Keeping this decision in mind, midterm elections are approaching which allows us to express our opinion about who is in power. A list of who voted for Kavanaugh to be sworn in was released and should be kept in mind when voting on November 6. Voting is vital since democracy works best when we all share our opinions.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
