Why I Love Writing

It's more than putting pen to paper.

Why I Love Writing
Hannah Olinger

Writing allows me to freely express myself in an unlimited amount of ways. It grants me the potential to write about absolutely anything in any format. More specifically, the beauty of writing is that it enables me to discover myself, tap into my creativity, and learn new things in the process. When writing, I feel like I hold the power to inspire and educate others as I relay my knowledge, thoughts and ideas. To add, as it permits me to be engaged in a process of thought and expression, writing unlocks my inner desires, passions, and interests. With the inscription of a pen, I can truly be who I want, and I can place myself in a different time and space. The magic behind the art of writing is that it possesses the capacity to bring life to new worlds, new voices, and new eras.

As the writer, I am in control, retaining the ability to choose who or what I want to write about as well as the meaning I give my writing. Like music, writing produces a diverse range of responses, and it can inspire, inform, please or captivate, among other things. Writing is more than just putting words on a page. With writing, I feel like I can make a difference and reach out to other people in a profound way. In essence, it's a form of communicating with others in a broader manner, but it's also a form of release, an outlet for self-expression that can provide relief. The great thing about writing is that I can unleash my feelings and emotions in any way I want, whether directly through personal reflection or indirectly through the construction of a fictional story.

I admire the versatility of writing, since there are really no rules when it comes to the subject on which to write and the form in which to write. The written word holds incredible power, and it gives me, as the writer, the ability to choose how to use that power to create value in what I write, strengthen my imagination, and connect with others in meaningful ways.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
