Spooky season has sadly come to an end. Now, stores will take down the spiders, the webs, and the gory, dismembered mannequins. They’ll skip the fact that November and Thanksgiving even exist, and they’ll set up Christmas trees, twinkly lights and the scents of sugar cookies will dance through your nostrils.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the holiday season. I love hanging ornaments on the Christmas tree with my family, and frosting cookies with my mom, but honestly, if I could make Halloween last longer, I would.
I say this because I LOVE dressing up, and for those who don’t, you’re missing out! Ever since I was little it was always the hardest thing to just chose one costume. How on earth are you going to make a little girl with a huge imagination just chose one costume that she can only wear for one night? Cruel.
Even though I may not be five anymore, I will always love dressing up for Halloween. I almost think I like it even more now! I think this is because once you get older, there are more than just princess and witch costumes to choose from. Especially in college, you see some very creative things from people.
This year, I saw a “one-night stand,” a girl dressed with a lamp on her head, and a box around her made to look like a dresser. I also saw a guy with a shirt with the outline of Oregon on it and the word “donor” below it (get it? Organ donor!). I, for one, am a huge fan of puns, so all of these make me crack up.
What is even more fun is challenging yourself to find a great costumer for cheap. As a kid, my parents would always get me a costume from Party City. One of those pristine, five-piece costumes that would be accessorized perfectly. Now, as a college student, I pay for my own things, which means paying for my own costume. Something else I really enjoy is thrifting, so it’s the perfect skill to have when Halloween comes around! You get to find bits and pieces to potential outfits and make them all come together into a make-shift costume. This is the main reason why I still get giddy when its “spooky season.”
Okay, I lied. One of the other main reasons I love Halloween so much is because not only do I get to dress up, but so do my animals. At home, I have two Golden Retrievers, Nala and Kona, and a cat named Juno. And it’s not just my dogs, it’s all the doggies that get all dressed up!
My Twitter feed has been blowing up with adorable outfits for dogs and cats alike, and if that doesn’t make you smile, I don’t know what would. This year, my dogs and cat went for a football theme. Nala was a “wide retriever” complete with the football jersey and pads, then Kona was a “rufferee” with a striped jersey, and last but not least, Juno was the penalty flag, all wrapped up in yellow. My parents sent me the picture and my homesickness became quite real.
So even though I may not be young enough to go around trick-or-treating anymore, I’m still young enough in my mind to be creative and fun for the Halloween holidays. I don’t think I’m alone on this either. After going out on Halloween (or “Halloweek” if you’re in Pullman) and seeing all of the creative, awesome costumes people come up with, it just reassures me that dressing up for Halloween will never get old.
