Why I Don't Like "New Year, New Me"

Just because the calendar year changes doesn't mean I'm suddenly a different person.

"New Year, New Me"

You know you've heard it. Maybe it's been the caption of your Instagram post. Maybe it's been your Facebook status. Maybe you've thought it and meant it as you wrote a list of your resolutions for the year. Or maybe, like me, it makes you roll your eyes.

While I'm certainly a proponent for wanting to better oneself, why only at the turn of the year?

I get that having a blank slate on a calendar is a good time to set new goals, but so many people talk about how soon they break those resolutions as soon as the year begins.

Why not start trying to reach these goals as soon as you think of them? Then, if you fail you can always start over without waiting a whole year to try again.

I'm pretty happy with who I am, but when I think of something I can do better or would like to try in the future, I try to put that into action as soon as possible, rather than waiting for an excuse to do so.

Each day should be dedicated to being someone you are happy with.

I hate to spoil this, but you will still be the same person in 2018 that you are now. Maybe your beliefs will change. Maybe your appearance will change. Maybe you'll make an effort to treat people differently.

That's great! Yet, no matter what you change, that doesn't mean you're not the same person you were a few days ago. You're still you, and that's a pretty great person to be!

New year, same me - and I'm pretty darn happy about that.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
