Disney has been the mainstream princess producer since the 1930s, inspiring and influencing young children with their dynamic characters and stories. But, 20th Century Fox showed up Disney with one special princess very close to my heart. Of course, almost every girl can say they have a favorite Disney princess, including myself, but overall Anastasia has always been my number one gal.
I mean, no she didn't save all of China or anything, but she has a lot to offer as an individual. First of all, this lady has been through A LOT. She is literally prone to tragedy and danger. She had a lifetime of hurt within the 18 years she'd been alive AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN REMEMBER IT. Her family is cursed (which, now that I think of it, is probably why she has such bad luck), Rasputin murders everyone she loves, and then she trips and falls, leaving her without her grandmother and getting amnesia in the process. Roaming the streets of St. Petersburg, she's taken to live with some ugly hag in an orphanage for a decade. She never even really left the place until she turned 18. Finally, when she did leave all she has was a dumb necklace to figure out her entire life.
She literally has nothing but that necklace and a stray dog to find what she will do next with her life but has so much determination to do it. She's literally like, " I don't know where life is taking me but, oh well here I go. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ " She has no idea what she's going to do and she's motivated and determined to find out who she is. Most people wouldn't think twice about going off into the world like that. But, she's got nothing to lose and is willing to keep going forward.
Then, of course, her first male interaction has to be with this con-artist kitchen boy that's trying to swindle her family's remaining fortune. Like, why couldn't it be some nice market clerk or something? But, nooooo. She falls right into Dimitri's shady Anastasia auditions, (in her own palace that he's been squatting in, I might add) because the poor cherub needs a passport to take the train and he makes them illegally. But, to be fair, she may have fallen for his plan and lies but doesn't take any of his crap along the way.
Did I mention already how she is literally prone to danger? On this journey to Paris to see her grandmother, Rasputin tries to kill her probably 3 times. First train ride? Here, let's run it off the tracks. Oh, you've never been on a boat before? LET ME TRY TO DROWN YOU. Can Anya ever catch a break?! Even though all of this is happening she still is traveling to Paris no matter what. Good for you, because I would have turned right around and went back to St. Pete's.
When they finally get to Paris and try and meet the Grand Duchess, Anya finds out that Dimitri tricked her into being Anastasia, because he wanted the reward. Knowing that she was hoodwinked and betrayed, she molly wop's Dimitri so hard, and honestly, I'm surprised his teeth were still intact. And after all of that, all I can say is, JOKES ON YOU PAL. SHE ACTUALLY IS ANASTASIA. She finds out later that night, and she and her grandmama couldn't be more thrilled.
At this point, if you don't think that Anya is a freakin' majestic and powerful woman, what are you even doing? She escaped death three times (if you don't count the possible times she could've caught a disease in that germ-ridden orphanage), recovered from amnesia after 10 years, found her family, and rose above the Russian poverty line within a few days. Not to mention, she stuck it to Dimitri even though she lowkey loves him and that takes guts, I tell you what. If none of that makes you believe she is the best princesses of all time, there is one major thing to convince you.
Rasputin gives killing her one last shot, Dimitri tries to save her, but is almost killed, and then Rasputin mocks her and her dead family in the process, and honestly that is where he crossed the line. She goes into EXTREME ROMANOV MODE and tears this dead guy a new one. She shatters his reliquary and each time she stomps on it, she proceeded to dedicate the cracking of glass to all those lost, hurt, or deserving of it. She kills Rasputin and the curse is finally lifted. She did all that BY HERSELF. And instead of going back to Russia to rule, she elopes with Dimitri (after all he apologized and almost died for her) and they sail off together into the night. She's a hero and a legend and she is a character who always taught me that if you're going through hell, keep on going. After all she's been through, I think a honeymoon and true love is more than well deserved. Don't you?
