If you haven't been living under a rock, you have seen or heard of this group from South Korea called BTS.
방탄소년단, better known as BTS, is a group that emerged as one of the biggest artists in 2017, not only in their native country but also in the United States and other countries as well. The group is composed of Rap Monster, JHope, Suga, V, Jin, Jimin, and Jungkook, who each has their own charm that aids to the success of the group. They are multi-talented, excelling in fields such as rap, hip-hop, dance, vocals, and their incredible visuals as well.
Although they possess extreme talents and eye-catching choreography, it's not something that hasn't been done before. Take a look at this group called Monsta X and you can see that they are on par in terms of talents and looks.
Although they are garnering popularity in most Asian countries and South Korea, this group is less known in the states compared to BTS. So what's attracting the Western audience to BTS rather than some of these other boy groups?
Previous to BTS rise to fame in the US, Kpop was still popular with many national fans all over the world, however, the genre was still considered a niche. Although the outstanding visuals and performances attract Western listeners, it can't be helped that the foreign language aspect limits them from fully emerging themselves into the genre.
Also, the Kpop industry is oversaturated with artists.
It is very difficult for western audiences to keep up with what these artists have to offer in terms of musical genres and styles. Then comes BTS.
Their style in music is still very much pop in their core. However, they don't shy away from genres such as hip hop and recent music trends like EDM and house music.
Another reason for the band's popularity, in my opinion, is bandwagon, which in terms of BTS, isn't necessarily a negative aspect. Like I previously mentioned, the Kpop industry is over saturated. People who are not consistently looking for new bands are overwhelmed and unsure where to start with this genre even if they like some of music they provide.
When BTS started to slowly blow up in the states, many people were given a chance to listen and become fans of their music. With one band to focus on, in many ways BTS became the face of Kpop in the United States.
