Twitter's CEO Jack Dorsey released a statement defending his decision to not ban Alex Jones or Infowars. Dorsey stated Jones "hasn't violated our rules" and they want to remain "impartial[ly] regardless of political viewpoints." However, Dorsey's statement falls short with both points.
Twitter's hateful conduct policy includes not allowing "promoting violence against other people." This includes "wishes for the physical harm of individuals or groups" or "behavior that incites fear about a protected group." Yet Jones and his followers have consistently threatened the families of the Sandy Hook shooting. One family has had to move close to six times and it is not safe for them to go to their child's grave anymore. Does Dorsey not consider this "inciting fear." Just recently, he threatened Robert Mueller during his show and said that he was "a demon I will take down." Dorsey's position that Jones has not violated Twitter guidelines is an outright lie and says just as much of their willingness to profit off of possible new Twitter users and their blatant insincerity in following their own guidelines.
Secondly, Dorsey conflates censoring Jones with censoring certain political ideas which is extremely problematic. People want Jones banned from social media because he has used his platform to spread malicious misinformation and threaten others not because he's conservative. By Jones using Twitter he is creating an open platform for his overzealous followers to hype each other up and attempt to follow through on his threats like when the Pizzagate scandal occurred where one of Jones's fans took an AR-15 into a restaurant because he believed Jones when he said Hillary Clinton hosted a pedophile ring there. This is not a conservative or a Republican viewpoint.
Twitter's decision to not ban Alex Jones is not an apolitical one but an immoral one.
