Lately I have been meditating on the song "Where my Heart Goes" by Colton Dixon, and I really wanted to share with you what I learned though it:
We are all often faced with disappointments, tough decisions, choices, character and morality tests. There is no escaping these things, not while we are alive. We can't alter what God sends our way, but we can for sure alter our reaction.
Who is the first person you turn to when you are faced with a difficult situation? Think about your very first reaction. Do you text your best friend? Or call your mom/dad? Do you ask your boyfriend/girlfriend to meet you as soon as possible? If your honest answer is not Jesus, then you're doing it wrong.
As I examined my heart in the light of this truth I discovered that my very first reaction to a difficult situation is not to go to God. Yes, I do go to Him, but He is usually not the first One that my heart goes to. I realized that my heart runs to other people and clings to them in the first place and this is so very wrong.
There is no denying the fact that talking to someone and crying on the shoulder of a physical being brings a lot of comfort, and don't get me wrong, I'm not discouraging it. But when you haven't gone to God to seek His comfort and embrace first, you shouldn't go elsewhere.
I discovered that this is a matter of deciding that Jesus is all you need, that you need no one else to get through a crisis. I know it sounds radical, but deciding this might change the way you look at situations.
I decided that even if it all breaks, if it goes to pieces, He is the one that I will believe in. I decided to make Him my refuge and my safe place in difficult times. I decided that if I'm feeling down or discouraged or angry or frustrated He is the first one I will go to, and I won't go talk to anyone else about my burden until I go on my knees and give it to Jesus first.
And I decided that:
This is my song that I sing foreverYou are my home, You are what I treasure
I want You to be where my heart goes
And if it all breaks
If it goes to pieces
You are the one that I will believe in
I know You won't ever let me go
I want You to be where my heart goes
