A Different Way To Look At Snow White And Her 7 Dwarfs

Our emotions can have many faces; sometimes there just happens to be seven.

I have a theory about “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Snow White doesn’t just live with the seven dwarfs because she's so distraught about the evil queen trying to murder her. Actually, she doesn’t seem upset at all when she's living with the dwarfs.

My theory is that Snow White finally leaves the castle, sees what a scary place the outside world is and finds solace in a little-secluded cottage where she is left alone with all of her own emotions and character traits, symbolized as dwarfs. She “meets” these dwarfs and starts to love them and even sees the good in the grumpiest dwarf in the bunch.

We all have our dwarfs. Some are flawed but maybe accepting our dwarfs is the key to the kind of happiness that has you singing and cleaning with a bunch of woodland creatures. I would like to strive for that kind of happiness, so here are my seven dwarfs:

1. Messy

Everyone has heard of selective hearing. Well, I think I have selective sight. I only see what I want to see. I know this could cause some problems in my life but in all honesty, it just makes me a tad bit messy.

I will leave papers from school all across the table and I will take my shoes off in random places. I don’t put dishes on my high priority of to-do’s and I always forget about the now wrinkled laundry in the dryer.

I don’t realize that all is unraveling until my husband comments that the house is “FILTHY.” I obviously get offended at first but then I look around and it’s like black and white TV getting color. Except that was an enjoyable experience.

2. Weepy

Sometimes I don’t understand tears. Maybe it’s the body’s way of saying, “Hey, this is too many emotions we have to cool down here,” and then all of a sudden, you’re crying because your body turned on the eye sprinklers. I get that it is a natural bodily function and can even be cathartic at times, but when I am a blubbering mess and the only thing I can think of to justify it is to say "the McDonald's ice cream machine was broken,"I start to reassess my level of self-control.

3. Sassy

My husband called me the queen of passive aggression. Of course, he might be biased since he has to spend so much time with me. No one else has to deal with the amount of seemingly innocent comments that hold so much attitude.

I’ve lost count of how many times I have hidden his phone because he said something that I thought was rude at the time. I also know that he hates movies like “Titanic,” but that just means I know what movie to play and what Celine Dion song to sing when he makes fun of me.

But, in the end, I always tell him where his phone is and I eventually change the movie. It’s just the little things in life that help me prove my point.

4. Lazy

If laziness is a sign that I need to grow up, then just call me Peter Pan.

5. Hungry

Recently, in one of those first day of class moments where we are supposed to introduce ourselves, I talked about my college major and where I worked. I was also supposed to tell the class one of my hobbies. I thought I could just put the usual reading or writing but that didn’t feel true to myself at the time. And at that time I was hungry. So I said that my hobby was eating.

Hobbies are supposed to be fun. I think eating is fun. Hobbies are supposed to interest us, I think cooking shows are interesting. Hobbies are supposed to make us happy. Cheeseburgers —cheeseburgers make me happy.

6. Mom

Moms have an admirable job. They give so much of themselves for the little ones they love. I’m a married college student. I still have at least a year left till I graduate. All I have is fur-babies, but who knows whats in store for the future.

7. Cheery

I like to think I am a happy person. I try to be a “cup is half full” kind of girl. I laugh at dad jokes and food makes me happy. I can’t decide which one is cuter, kittens or puppies, so I decide to be an equal opportunist and love them all equally.

I smile at the babies who just learned how to wave. I smell puppies breath and let it lick my nose because that is absolutely adorable. And I will have a good day, sir or madam at the checkout counter.

The next time you are watching this fairy tale classic, take a second and think about the dwarfs in your life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
