Net neutrality, although being a piece of terminology that is relatively unknown by probably the majority of Internet users, constitutes what the majority of Internet users believe in. Net neutrality is a principle that ensures freedom of communication, speech, and expression online, at all times, for all of its users.
So why has net neutrality recently become an issue? The FCC, federal commission which possesses the duty to regulate the Internet, has proposed a repeal to its Open Internet Order, which was put into effect back in 2015, under the authority of Ajit Pai, a U.S. attorney who is the current Chairman of the FCC. By repealing the order, the FCC would be allowing internet service providers (ISPs) to block content and services they may choose not to allow their users/customers to view or access.
Theoretically, this would create a degree of censorship of the Internet in a way in which we haven't really seen before. This repeal coincides with the Republican Party's domination of the White House as of recently, since the inauguration of President Donald Trump, as well as the entrance of his presidential cabinet into office.
So, what can we do, as the citizens of a democratic, free society? Well, some of the largest technology companies and organizations in the world, such as Amazon, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and so many more are taking a huge stand against this proposal, by taking part in a "day of action" against it. Many people have rallied across the country in order to direct awareness to this shocking proposal.
If this repeal does, in fact, go into effect, the only institution that would have the ability to do something about it i Congress. Therefore, grassroots movements toward reinstating net neutrality would have to become the norm. This would mean that avid supporters of net neutrality would have to put in a whole lot more work into raising awareness in order to secure their freedoms online
