When you think of comfort food, you might automatically think ice cream, pizza or anything else that comes to mind. All of these are comforting.
But, what makes comfort food so comforting?
In movies, we generally see girls drowning themselves in a tub of ice cream when they feel down or in the South in the 1970s, people ate grits. Scientists believe that the power we give to comfort food is mainly the association it calls to mind. People who have a positive and jovial relationship with their family and friends have a higher chance to reach for comfort food when in time of need. One might subconsciously binge-eat a food that reminds them of happy memories that were given to them in their childhood for comfort.
Yes, ice cream is delicious, sweet, and creamy- but it also can remind someone the cheerful times they went out for ice cream with their friends or family.
