It's weird that we live in a world where can keep up with people's lives without ever having to meet the person face to face. For better or for worse, we live in a cyber world.
"You totally gained like 3 followers from the interaction, so you're basically famous now."
Thanks to our cyber world, you can now have an entire friendship with childhood BFF Jessica who moved across the country in third grade. You see that she has just won a competition. Congrats, Jessica! You show your love and support by giving her a virtual thumbs up. You would never respond to her like that in real life, but on the internet it's okay. This cyber world is amazing!
Your cyber world lets you get in touch with celebrities too... like what?! You tweet about how awesome Taylor Swift's concert was and to your astonishment she retweets you! You totally gained like 3 followers from the interaction, so you're basically famous now. All your friends are jealous of your new cyber-socialite status.
Also you've been sending GIFs heavily to Jeff from geography class. Things seem to be getting pretty serious. Thanks to cyber world, you feel like you relate on a level deeper than the Mariana Trench.
The more you develop feelings for Jeff, the more you expect him to invest his time in your relationship. You can't help but check your phone every minute that he doesn't respond with a sweet new GIF. Your cyber world starts caving in when you see that he has gone ghost.
You start to pine for the days when you were chocolattegrl210 on AIM and you had complete conversations with people. Your friends cared enough to at least say "brb" or "ttyl" when they had to step away from the conversation. And god forbid they didn't update their away status to "g2g do hw :-/ If u were my hw i'd throw u on a desk and do u all nite long" to keep you informed AND entertained by their absences.
Now you have no response whatsoever. All you get from Jeff is a read receipt, which basically means he threw all those heartfelt GIFs away like an underappreciated locker love letter. You realize that the virtual threads binding your relationship is just not sufficient. This cyber world is turning out to be a nightmare.
You take steps to escape the clutches of your cyber world. You choose to do online dating, so that you can meet the real world and cyber world in the middle when you by going on a real date with your match. When you finally meet, your seemingly perfect date rolls a strike at the bowling alley. You give a thumbs up. A real thumbs up. You question why you chose such a lame response to your date's triumph. Thumbs up had seemed way less awkward online! Your date never speaks to you again.
At the end of the day the reality is that you're alone, but at least you have the internet to keep you company. What's Jessica up to this week on the other side of the country?
