If college has deprived me of anything, it's been quality reading time. One would think English majors have all the time in the world to read, but my time is spent tackling required readings, in addition to papers and other assignments. I'm left with no time for pleasure reading. But luckily, I have Christmas break. To quote Olan Rogers, "I'll be scotch tape, I'll be so dang clear of anything." So in 3+ weeks I won't have to think about college. I hope to make it through this not so brief list.
1. The last four Harry Potter books
I somehow missed the opportunity of reading the "Harry Potter" series as a kid. I received the first book as a gift last summer and decided to start then. I got through three books before moving into college. Now my "Harry Potter" loving roommate is itching for me to finish so she can introduce me to "A Very Potter Musical", as well as watch the movies with me. I look forward to staying up into the wee hours of the morning and reading until my eyes burn.
2. The Catcher in the Rye
I actually started "The Catcher in the Rye" over the summer in my pursuit to read more classics. I got through about a quarter of the book, but it has sat untouched and has been literally collecting dust since move-in day. Bonus for all the Gilmore Girls fans reading this: "The Catcher in the Rye" is one of over 300 books compiled in the Rory Gilmore reading challenge!
3. Little Women
I've wanted to read the original "Little Women" since watching the movie adaptation starring Winona Ryder and Christian Bale last year. I was desperately applying for scholarships left and right, and I found one with a prompt centered around the book. After watching the movie in lieu of the book itself, I wished I had taken the time to read it. Hopefully now I'll be able to do so.
4. Some short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald
I have this 800 page book of them and I've only read about two.
5. Le Petit Prince/The Little Prince
In my 4th year of French in high school, I was given the assignment to read Le Petit Prince. As one can imagine, reading a book in a language you barely have an elementary understanding of is pretty difficult. I wanted to finish though, so I bought a bilingual version. I've been working on my copy for over a year so this book really needs to be finished.
6. Something by Pat Conroy
Since reading his "The Water is Wide" in my AP English class, I've acquired about 5 different books by my favorite teacher's favorite author. Since she's the reason I too want to teach high school English, I figured I should read up on some good ole Conroy.
My life is honestly just an unfinished to-do list, and my reading list definitely mirrors that.
