Living just north of Chicago, I've seen my fair share of strange things on the city's CTA train line, also knows as the "L." Some things have been understandable, but others have been downright incomprehensible. Here are a few of the least understandable.
1. The Gamblers
This has happened a few times. Despite the CTA's best efforts and many announcements, gambling does still happen on the trains. More than once, I've sat down just to have people walk into the car (and let me tell you, walking between cars is scary) to sit down in the aisle and convince people to gamble on a dice game. The weirdest part is that people actually agree! I still cannot comprehend the reasoning behind this.
2. The Weird Outfits
Obviously, some people in weird outfits show up on the train. I've seen lots of things, but the worst by far was the lady who sat down next to me wearing head-to-toe eggplant. I felt bad while secretly laughing about all of the purple that she was wearing, but it was honestly ridiculous. She had a purple shirt, purple pants, purple shoes, purple socks, a purple purse, and a purple phone case. It was honestly ridiculous.
3. Unfortunate Health Issues
Once, I was waiting on the platform and noticed that the train that was stopping had an entire car that was open. Thinking that it was probably empty for a reason, I avoided it. However, I was obviously curious about the reason. About two minutes into the ride, I heard an announcement from the conductor stating that somebody had been coughing up blood in that car, so they had to quarantine the entire thing until they had the necessary equipment to clean it out. Someone was coughing up blood? I just hope that the person was OK.
4. The Porn Star
Last week, as I was on the train to go to the planetarium, a man sat down next to me on the train and pulled out his phone to watch what I thought was Youtube. Nope! It was porn! It even had sound! I was obviously horrified, so I gave him a really dirty look and moved to the other side of the train. A few stops later, we made really awkward eye contact as he got off the train. He then proceeded to watch his phone as he walked across the platform and down the station stairs! He had true dedication.
