Volunteering over Holiday Break
World Arts Me

Happy Holidays! I am so proud of you for making it this far bud. Now you are probably coming home for college, and you just want to sit back and relax. You want to have no mental or physical stress that you dealt with for the past few months. I am proud of you.

You should volunteer over break. If you can not get a job due to circumstances, or because there is no work for hire in your area, try volunteering. It will look wonderful on your resume. The reason that is, is because it shows you do have dedication to helping the community. As well as you learning vital skills that will take you far in the workforce.

It may even show your future employers what you are passionate about. Especially if you stick at it for a while. For example, I have a friend who wanted to work at a bookstore. But there was an issue, he needed experience. Sure he worked as a waiter, but that is not in retail, that is services. So he decided to volunteer at the library, to help build up his resume. He helped by organizing books, assisting people, and reading to children. Now with that he also volunteered at an animal shelter. That may not help him with getting that job, but it shown that he had a source of empathy for other living creatures aside from humans. So he went to that bookstore a few months later, and what do you know? He was hired! He even still helps out at the pet shelter and library, making that one of his favorite free time hobbies. If your employer sees that you actually are willing to do things to help others then they are likely to hire you.

Now let us not think of how wonderful it will look on a resume. Think about the community. So often in the news it is tragedy, and people fighting and other negative things. I know who does not want to be on the news for something positive. Do not even think about that. But instead think of how you are putting a positive vibe onto the community. A positive impact on the community makes everything better. People constantly need good vibes even if they say that they do not care. As someone who volunteers a lot, even if it is by helping elderly people with groceries, I like having that satisfaction, of being good. It is a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Why not make life easier for everyone? Come and help others. It can change you entirely, and help you grow and become even more incredible than what you are already. You will meet new people, and make new friends and learn more about the world around you. It will broaden your experiences and you will grow and change, just like you did in college. So go do it. And then when you do, come tell me your experiences. I would love to hear them.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
