The United States Has More To Worry About Than Plastic Straws

The "Save The Ocean/Save The Sea Turtles" initiative is at an all-time high right now. I think saving the ocean and the animals is great, but not what we as a country need to focus on right now. There are so many other things that are wrong with this country that could use saving.

Everyone is so focused on plastic straws they seem to ignore the fact that there are still more than 400 migrant children separated from their parents.

It is two months past the court given deadline, that was meant to force the Trump administration to reunite these children with their parents.

We did that. That is our fault as a country. We ripped those innocent children away from their one and only comfort. We have a president who thought that was okay. It absolutely disgusts me, but we should really save the sea turtles, right?

I would also like to point out another thing on the long list of things that should be above banning straws. Let's discuss the fact that the United States military budget is 590 billion dollars while the education budget is only 68 billion.

We are allowed to spend $522 billion more on war than education. Not only that Trump has purposed we increase the military budget to $681.1 billion.

How is that okay? We spend more money giving people weapons of destruction than we do to educating them.

Also to make my point even clearer, plastic straws only make up 0.03 percent of ocean waste. 46 percent of ocean waste comes from abandoned fishing equipment.

I get they are trying to use it as a small step that will lead to bigger steps, but it is definitely not the top priority right now.

I don't see how anyone can focus on plastic straws when there are so many bigger issues right now. The United States has lots of things that need fixing and almost all of them come before the ban of plastic straws.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
