I think we've all finished a show on Netflix and struggled to find something to watch next. We ask our friends for suggestions, and we get the same handful of shows every time- Grey's Anatomy, Gossip Girl, The Office, Friends, and Riverdale. At this point, I think we're all a little tired of these shows, so here are some Netflix shows you probably actually haven't already watched.
1. Containment
When a viral, completely deadly virus breaks out in Atlanta, half the city is quarantined, where they are exposed to the virus, are cut off from the rest of the world, run low on supplies, and are subject to gang rule. The show follows characters both in the quarantine zone and their loved ones on the outside as they investigate the source of the virus and try to survive long enough for a cure to be found.
What I loved about this show is how real the characters and their connections are. Absolutely nothing seemed forced or unnatural, allowing you to become extremely connected to the plot and the characters. This is an easy binge because it is only one season and you won't want to stop watching once you start.
One season. Thirteen episodes. 42-minute episodes.
Warning: It is fairly gory and it will break your heart.
2. Safe
When Tom Delaney's teenage daughter goes missing, he will stop at nothing to find out what happened to her. The show follows his quest to find his daughter while slowly revealing events from the night of her disappearance, the present, and the past.
Usually, with mysteries, I am pretty good at figuring out what happened and who is involved. Plot twists rarely actually shock me unless they are baseless. This show, however, had me the edge of my seat the entire time. I never quite knew what was happening until the very end when every loose end is tied up perfectly. This is also an easy binge since it's short and leaves you wanting more at the end of each episode.
One season. Eight episodes. 45-minute episodes.
3. The Sinner
The show begins with Cora at the beach with her son and husband when she suddenly stabs a stranger to death. She has no idea why she did it or who the man was, so investigators begin looking into her past for answers. The show follows her as she slowly remembers bits and pieces of her past and discovers the man she killed wasn't a stranger after all.
This show is plot twist after plot twist after plot twist, and I promise you won't see any of it coming. It truly had me on the edge of my seat at every moment, and if you stop paying attention for even a second, you miss out on so much. The only way I can accurately describe it is in one word- wild.
One season. Eight episodes. 42-minute episodes.
Warning: There are some scenes that are... odd and slightly uncomfortable. I promise you it's worth it.
4. The Staircase
When Michael Peterson's wife dies suspiciously, he is the only suspect. Swearing he is innocent, the documentary follows his trial and the acquisition of evidence for and against him, including secrets from his past and a similar death connected to him from many years prior.
Usually, I can't really get into true crime, but I really enjoyed this docuseries. It is slightly slow, so I wouldn't say it's the best for binge watching. However, it really is a fascinating case that leaves a lot to the imagination, reveals flaws in the justice system, and leaves you wondering what the truth is.
One season. Thirteen episodes. 50-minute episodes.
5. Skins
The show follows several groups of friends as they make their way through school. They turn to drugs, alcohol, and sex to deal with their individual problems and make it through various tragedies. It focuses on three sets of friends, each group getting two seasons with the final season going back to revisit three fan-favorite characters.
This show is an emotional roller coaster. It will make you feel every single emotion in the book as the characters deal with real-world problems that often hit close to home. This is another show that makes you feel very connected to the characters and their struggles, and while many of the coping mechanisms they employ and the problems they face are extreme, they are still very relatable.
Seven seasons. 70 episodes. 45 minute episodes.
Warning: This show is very sexual.
6. The Kindness Diaries
Leon Logothetis decides he is going to travel the world with nothing but the clothes on his back and his motorcycle, leaving him dependent on the kindness of strangers for food, housing, and long-distance transportation. As he travels the world, he meets people willing to bring him into their homes and get nothing in return. As he learns their stories, he gives one person each episode a thank you gift he thinks will change their lives most.
This is just a feel-good show that makes you realize there still is so much kindness in the world. It will inspire you to be the best person you can be and give you a whole new bucket list of places you want to travel to.
One season. 13 episodes. 20 minute episodes.
