In part of middle school and most of high school, I was a closeted emo kid. I loved listening to songs filled with teen angst and a heavy guitar line that also happen to put me in a great mood. The friends that I had in school were more so obsessed with mainstream music such as One Direction and Drake so they always thought I was just a bit odd for liking such a different sound than they were used to.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term "emo", allow me to enlighten you. Wikipedia defines emo as, "A rock music genre characterized by an emphasis on emotional expression, sometimes through confessional lyrics." The term is also used to describe a subculture that was made by the fans of the bands that played this genre. There is a certain style of clothing, hairstyle, and slang terms that started to trend within the community.
With news about the last ever Vans Warped Tour, a traveling music festival revolving around this genre, and conversation had with some friends, I decided to take it upon myself to craft the best emo kid playlist. I hope that this triggers some nostalgic memories and puts a smile on your face. Enjoy!
