It looks like it is that time of year again, where the women are in the kitchen cooking turkeys and baking pumpkin pie while the men are watching football while shouting meaninglessly at the TV screen. Then, at night, you invite friends and family over to feast like the pilgrims. You might be thinking, yeah, that's what happens in my house at Thanksgiving, but that is not what happens in the Kohli and Chhabra house. Here are three traditions we do with a special twist to make Thanksgiving even better!
1. The Indo-American Mashup Of The Season
While we always serve the usual turkey, the mashed potatoes and so on, we also throw in our favorite Indian dishes like the panner, chicken and samosas. These foods along with the traditional treats of Thanksgiving allows us to celebrate the holiday in an Indo-American way. And don't forget dessert! We always have a plethora of dessert options to choose from, but we always make sure to have pie. We have two to three different types of pies, ranging from pumpkin to walnut and sometimes, even apple. We can't forget the Indian twist, so there is always kheer to seal the deal.
2. Who said Christmas and Thanksgiving can't be celebrated together?
We call it the Thanksgiving-Christmas fusion!
We only meet each other once a year for only three to four days, so we need to make the most out of that time, right? That's why the next Thanksgiving tradition is one of my favorites... white elephant. White elephant is when we all bring gifts, and then, everyone pick one without knowing what it is. Now I know this is more of Christmas time activity, but seriously, look at the stores, they have completely forgotten about Thanksgiving. At least we have the turkey to celebrate it.
3. It's called fast travel.
The last twist that we have on Thanksgiving is that we don't go to our grandparent's house like everyone else because let's be honest, that can get kind of old, so to jazz up the holidays, we go to our cousin's houses and stay there. We take turns every year, and we also do some sightseeing the day before or after. This keeps everyone on their toes, interested in what is going to come. Depending on where we're going, we do different activities from rollerblading to shopping or watching a new movie in theaters. All of these places, activities and sites makes every Thanksgiving a new adventure!
