The Top 9 Reasons Why I Hate Flying

Sometimes I'm not sure flying is worth the hassle.

I have the worst luck when it comes to flying. I swear nobody could have more problems than I do. I can't remember the last time I wasn't delayed, my plane didn't have mechanical problems or I didn't have to walk to the farthest gate. Yes, it is nice that flying gets me where I want to go much faster than driving, but sometimes I'm not convinced that flying is actually better than driving. In honor of having another terrible experience in the airport here is a list chronicling every single complaint I have ever had about flying.

1. My flight always gets delayed

I swear to God that the last time I had a flight that wasn't delayed in some way, shape or form was over a year ago. I'm on a plane 8 or more times every year. Just let that sink in. Whether it's due to maintenance problems, weather or whatever other excuse they feed you being delayed sucks.

2. My gate is always the furthest one from security

On my flight over spring break I was in gate B17 all the way at the back of the Dayton airport and F28 the very last gate in my section in O'Hare. Oh and also my gate in O'Hare was in a completely DIFFERENT terminal than I thought I was in so I spent 20 minutes walking through what felt like the entire airport.

3. I always sit next to creepy, old men

I'm not sure what it says about my luck but I am always next to old men. Yes, they mostly just sleep the whole time and don't try to talk to me, but also why do I never sit next to people my own age? This feeling is exasperated when I'm on a flight with all college students, yet somehow I'm the only one sitting next to an adult. And if I'm not sitting next to an old man I'm sitting next to someone who doesn't speak English. Don't ask me why. It just happens.

4. One time I got flagged by security for bringing too many books home

On my way back home this spring break my duffel bag got flagged by security because I had six books sitting in the bottom of my bag. The TSA agent then proceeded to pull all of the books out from the bottom of my bag disrupting my carefully packed bag and forcing me to stuff all my stuff in random places once she was done. Needless to say, I will not be flying with six books EVER again.

5. I never eat when I'm in the airport

I almost always fly alone and I never check a bag. That means I'm carrying around both my duffel bag and my backpack everywhere I go in the airport. Since I'm flying alone I feel like I can never go to the bathroom or get something to eat because that would require me to drag all my stuff with me since I can't ask anyone to watch it for me. This has caused me to skip a lot of lunches.

6. I can't sleep on planes

Most people when they go on planes just sleep the whole time, but I cannot fall asleep on a plane. It doesn't matter how long I'm going to be stuck on the plane or how late it is, I simply cannot fall asleep. This meant that when I flew all the way to Europe I was up the whole time. Plane rides are so much longer and more tedious when you can't pass the time by sleeping.

7. Having to go to the bathroom on the plane

Unless you are the aisle seat having to go to the bathroom while you're up in the air is such an inconvenience. I hate having to ask the person next to me, or if I'm the window seat the two people next to me, to get up and move just so I can go to the bathroom. Also plane bathrooms are small and for some unknown reason I find them to be really creepy.

8. Turbulence

Let's get one thing straight. I am not scared of flying. But I do hate turbulence. It doesn't matter how safe I normally feel turbulence scares me. It is not a pleasant feeling to be jumbled around thousands of miles above the ground.

9. Security

I know I already dedicated one of these list points to security, but it is such a pain in my butt I feel like it deserves another one. It is such a hassle to take my shoes and belt off and take my labtop out of my overpacked backpack. And don't even get me started on the lines. I hate having to wait 30 minutes to get through security. And why do I sometimes not have to take my shoes off and get to go through just the metal detector?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
