It's no secret that I love a good horror film, and this year was a great year for the horror film industry. With such awesome and heart-pounding horror films premiering in 2017, it was hard to choose my favorites. But here are my top 5 horror films from 2017.
1. "Get Out"
Probably one of the most popular horror films of 2017, Get Out tells the tale of Chris, a young African-American man who goes to meet his white girlfriend’s parents for the weekend, but things turn from creepy to downright horrifying when her family isn’t what they seem to be. Jordan Peele directed and wrote this haunting film, that left audiences scared and confused. This is Peele’s first horror film, but you wouldn’t be able to tell, considering it was one of the top films this year. It was recently nominated for four Academy Awards, Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Original Screenplay.
2. "It Comes At Night"
Some of my favorite horror films are psychological films. It Comes At Night is one of those films. While most horror films use monsters, ghosts, or killers to create scares, It Comes At Night uses fear coming from inside the characters minds. In a post-apocalyptic world, two families have to survive off of practically nothing, only being able to go outside during the day. It’s unsafe to go out at night, but we never really know why. Tensions rise in the two families who are all hoping not to get infected by the virus that has spread, killing almost the entire world. Their world is quiet and peaceful until the threat of one of them being infected causes everyone to question whether they should live off of their morality or their fear.
3. "Annabelle: Creation"
The film has one of my favorite horror film directors, David F. Sandberg. Sandberg started directing with very low budget short horror films, and has recently begun directing Hollywood films, his first hit being Lights Out. He directed the second of the Annabelle series, which premiered this year. Annabelle: Creation brought all the scares of the original Annabelle, and I thought a better story. While horror movie chains usually get dismissed as awful, I think Annabelle is a good scare and a fun time.
4. "Creep Two"
Another sequel on my list, Creep 2 is just as eerie and exciting as the first. In Creep 2, a young filmmaker travels to different stranger’s homes to learn more about other lifestyles. When she finds a Craigslist ad for a self-proclaimed serial killer, she decides to travel to his home and explore what he has to say. But after spending some time at his home, she realizes it was a deadly mistake. Directed and co-written by Patrick Brice, this film, and it’s original are a terrifying experience that will leave you shaking.
5. "Berlin Syndrome"
A night of romance turns into a sinister kidnapping for Australian photojournalist Clare, when she meets Andi while on a trip to Berlin. This terrifying movie is any person’s worst nightmare. The Australian film directed by Cate Shortland left audiences scared to ever meet to new people ever again. While Berlin Syndrome fell at the bottom of my list, the realistic situation that Clare gets herself into in this film left me unable to sleep.
