As someone who got acne at a young age, my introduction to makeup was not positive or voluntary; makeup was something I had to wear to cover up my bad and very oily skin. Years went by of not wanting to go outside or go to school because I was self-conscious of the bumps on my face. I pretended to be sick or just plain begged my mom to not let me go to school that day. Luckily, I was not bullied for having bumps on my face; I guess I just went to school with decent people. So yes, I wore makeup because I was insecure, at first.
I started to wear makeup besides concealer and foundation when I was in high school. This is when I started to watch so many beauty tutorials on YouTube that I wanted to try eyeshadow out myself. When I wore it to school, someone said to me, "You look different. Are you wearing makeup?" I said, "Yes." They said something along the lines of, "You look nice."
This is when I started to feel a little more confident, so I started to wear makeup on a regular basis. Fast forward to today; the acne is gone and I still wear makeup. Why? It's not because I feel like I have to, but because I want to. I have gone outside without any makeup when I still had acne, and guess what, nobody said a thing. I still have scars on my face, but I do not feel the urge to cover them up as I did before. If all my acne came back tomorrow, then I would be more comfortable not covering it up than I did before.
So, to anyone who thinks people wear makeup because they're insecure, I'll keep it real -- a lot of us are and a lot of us aren't. Just because someone wears a full face of makeup, this does not mean that they're uncomfortable going outside without makeup on either. Please try to think of makeup as an accessory, rather than a necessity.
I entered the makeup world thinking that it was expected of me to cover up my acne. Today, I think of makeup as just another accessory, like earrings, a watch or a nice pair of shoes. Now do you see makeup differently? I hope that one day more people treat makeup like this, makeup and non-makeup wearers alike.
