To the Girl going into a Male-DominatedĀ Field

Because sometimes we need a little encouragement to keep going.

To the Girl going into a Male-DominatedĀ Field

From the time I was a little girl I knew I loved aviation. It wasn't until I was older I realized that I wasn't just interested in aviation, but that I wanted to be a pilot. It wasn't until I went to college to become a pilot that the statistics about female pilots were put into perspective. There are days where I am the only girl in the airport. There are classes where I am the only girl sitting in that lecture hall. But, that doesn't mean I can't do it.

You are just as good, if not better.

You might feel as though you aren't as good because you struggle with certain material or it takes you longer to grasp a concept. I can reassure you, that you are not the only one struggling with that same material and the boy sitting next to you might act like he understands what's happening, but is just as clueless as you are.

Stop trying to "prove" yourself

Being a girl in a male-dominated field, you might feel like you need to prove yourself to all of your male peers. Stop trying to prove that you belong where you are. Your success will tell them way better than your words will.

You will deal with sexists, and that's okay.

You are going to deal with people that believe that you will never be successful in your field because of your gender and are stuck in the old-school thought that women belong in the kitchen at home with the children. That is okay, because you don't need other people's approval to work in a field you love. Your success will prove them wrong anyways.

Find your people

You have to find your people in order to get through. Team up with other people in the same field. Join a sorority or professional fraternity in your field. These people are going to help you and push you when things get tough.

Never give up

There are going to be people that doubt your ability along the path to your success regardless of what field you're going into. Never give up on your goals and dreams. Your goals and dreams don't have an expiration date. Keep pushing.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast ā€œBirthdayā€ on anyoneā€™s birthday. I knew all of the words to ā€œBack In The U.S.S.Rā€ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iā€™m not someone to ā€œfangirlā€ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
