In our lifetime we have many, many friends. There is the friend who you get wild with, the friend that you cry with, the friend who you gossip with; your best friend. Then there is the friend that gets you. And they all hold a special place in your heart, just not as much as the friend that gets you.
The friend that gets you is the friend who you can truly be yourself with — no if, ands or buts about it. They are the friend who you tell everything to, whether it is something serious like a divorce in the family or something silly like crushing on a boy who you definitely should not be crushing on.
Not once do you feel judged, not once do you feel crazy for having such thoughts about such boy, and not once do you feel any hesitation when telling them something. They may not be your best friend when you think of who your best friend is at the top of your head, but when you have time to think about it, you realize they are your best friend. This is a friend who you should hold on to.
So, to the friend that gets me:
Thank you so much for letting me rant in your car for hours on end while you listen the entire time. Thank you for never judging me for what I have to say or convince me otherwise that I am wrong. Thank you for being there when my best friend is not, for holding me when I cry, and for loving me even though you truly know I am crazy. Thank you for being you, especially on the days when I feel like I am alone and no one gets me — you show up and show me I am not alone. That means the world to me.
I cannot think of another soul who knows as much as you know about me, which I guess should scare me a little bit, but I know never in a billion years would you use this against me or tell anyone what I say to you. You truly are a remarkable woman, and I hope I am the person that gets you, too.
You inspire me to be a better friend to everyone by the way you care for me and listen to me. When I struggle with what I have to say, it does not matter because I know you'd get it. Whether or not you have been through the same experience as me, you put yourself in my shoes and you understand. Sometimes we just have to give each other a look and we know exactly what the other one is thinking; sometimes we have to explain a little bit what we are trying to say, but we pick up on it immediately; and sometimes we do that girly thing where we really do get it and we squeal and hug each other. I know I am ranting, so I am going to stop right now, but I can stop right now because, as you are reading this, you get what I am trying to say.
Thank you for being the friend that gets me, and I hope that no one else ever gets me as much as you get me.
