Safa's Tips To Surviving Freshman Year

Going into freshman year of highschool I did not really know what I was getting myself into. After have going to the same school for nine years, to say I was nervous going into high school would be an understatement. I was taking challenging classes and only had two other friends going to the same school, but freshman year was actually a breeze compared to sophomore year. I was able to meet people who are now some of my closest friends and was able to have a great time. Here are some tips to help you survive your first year of high school.

1. Budget time wisely and realistically

Although this may be the most basic tip, it definitely is the most important. Procrastination isn't a good policy, and its less stressful if you get your work done earlier on.

2. Always have a snack in your locker

Keeping a simple granola bar in your locker will make all the difference if you ever are running late to have breakfast.

3. Friends come and go, accept that people change

You are constantly meeting new people in high school. People change, and you shouldn't hold on to the past.

4. Set attainable goals

Keep realistic goals that you will be able to achieve throughout your four years.

5. Join clubs, even those that may not seem interesting to you

Joining clubs is a great way to meet new people as well as make new connections.

6. There will be times where school comes before sleep but don't make it a habit

In the long run, studying late will pay off however don't stay up late every night. Make sure to get a healthy amount of sleep.

7. Last minute studying does pay off

Regardless of how much you think you've studied, going over your notes one last time won't hurt.

8. Don't instantly judge others who may be a little different

You never know what's going on in someones life so avoid judging people. Gossip is hurtful, and you wouldn't enjoy it if the roles were reversed.

9. Avoid getting into big fights over little things

Remember to forgive and forget.

10. Remember to hold your weight in group projects

Nothing is more annoying than a group member who doesn't do any of their work. It is always important to hold your own weight and get your work done.

11. SAT/ACT scores are not everything

Although incredibly important, you are able to take these tests over and over again so getting a bad score on your first attempt does not mean anything.

12. Find genuine and reliable friends

Finding a good group of genuine friends is important.

13. Use a comfortable and durable backpack

Use a backpack that will be able to hold all of your things, not one that is pretty and shiny.

14. People don't care about how you look in school

The number of people that come to school in pajamas is insane. Although it is great to dress up once in a while, its better to be comfortable.

15. Allow yourself to relax during lunch and any other breaks

Make sure you give yourself a moment to breathe during lunch.

16. If you're ever stuck on a topic, Khan Academy and Crash Course will be your best friend

Youtube has videos on any topic you can imagine, and sometimes the instructors in the video will explain a topic better than your teacher.

17. Pick electives based on a career pathway that you may be interested in

Because I am interested in the medical field, I was able to take Intro to Healthcare Science in which I was able to learn more about the field.

18. If you wear contacts, carry an extra pair of glasses

Your eyes may get irritated, and its important that you be able to see in class.

Try not to miss a lot of major assignments

Making things up is a pain because teachers have busy schedules. Try not to miss school that often.

Remember to have fun

In the end, the most important thing is to have a good time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
