I have to drive 4.5 hours to go home from college and that drive is BORING. The entire drive home, I keep thinking about how ready I am to be home already. For those of us that have to drive long distances to see our family or to simply go home for the week or weekend, these thoughts cross our minds while we are making the trek home.
1. THAT’S MY JAM!
Your favorite song comes on and you start to sing along! This drive won’t be so bad with your favorite song blaring. For me, anytime a country song comes on I turn it up and start to dance in my seat!
2. GO. THE. SPEED. LIMIT
The expressway speed limit is 70 on most of the expressways that I drive home on. If the road conditions are fine and the weather is beautiful, THEN WHY ARE WE DRIVING 55 MPH ON THE EXPRESSWAY. Please drive the speed limit because I just want to be home.
3. What’s my exit number?
I know what the area around the exit looks like, but I can’t remember what the exit number is. I think this is the right exit, let's hope for the best. Ah, there is that store that my family stops at when they pick me up and we come home. I know I took the right exit now.
4.How long have I been driving?
I have literally been sitting in this seat for what feels like forever. Am I ever going to stop driving? IT’S ONLY BEEN 2 HOURS AND I HAVE 2.5 HOURS TO GO.
5. Did I forget something?
I hate that feeling when... you're almost halfway home and you start to wonder if you forgot something. If you are like me, you probably think it’s something that you need, like your medicine. You are already halfway home so what are you supposed to do? I just keep driving and look for it when I get home (and hope I remembered it, or that it will magically appear in my bag if I DID forget).
6. Is this place safe to get gas?
I have to get gas or I’m never going to make it home tonight. Is this area safe to get gas in? If I just hurry then I should be okay.
7. Am I home yet?
I just want to be home and done driving already. I have been driving for what feels like FOREVER. I know I’m getting close but this is honestly taking forever and ever.
8. These look familiar...
Finally. The beginning of the familiar territory is when I start to recognize the roads that I grew up driving down. Just 20 minutes until I’m finally home! It’s so nice to be able to know where to turn without processing if this is the right turn in my head. Plus I know these roads like the back of my hand
9. I’M FINALLY HOME!
I see the porch light is on and my family is patiently waiting for me to walk in the door. As soon as my feet touch the driveway, I’m running through that door.
The drive is always worth it, no matter how annoying or how far. The time spent with family and friends is much more than what is spent on the drive home so it's not too bad. But, we get to do it all over again when we have to go back.
