There has not been a day in my life where my family didn't consist of a pet dog. In fact, I've always had at least two dogs as part my family at a time. With that said, you could say I am a pretty avid dog person. Dogs bring so much joy and happiness to a family and I've learned a lot from mine throughout the years. Here are some things that my dogs have taught me.
1. A little love and affection go a long way.
As a family, we have rescued several dogs from animal shelters. When we would first bring home a rescue, often times they would be very scared and shy. However, with a little time and a lot of love, these dogs had turned out to be the most loving, playful and happy dogs we have ever had. Love and kindness goes a long way, so I try to pay it forward as much as I possibly can.
2. The 3-second rule is real.
Food is always dropped on the floor when snacking, and my dogs never fail to come running through the house to eat whatever I have dropped. Your dogs don't have any issues eating off the floor, so there shouldn't be a reason for you to have any either!
3. It's okay to let loose!
My dog is extremely active, and often times I find her sprinting around the house and jumping on couches to have fun. She's extremely goofy and loves to have fun no matter where we are. Sometimes you have to make do with what you have in order to have a good time.
4. Cherish the time you have
We got the dog I have now when she was just eight weeks old, practically a newborn puppy. She was so cute and small, and it seemed as if she was only a puppy for a very short amount of time. Now, she's six years old and substantially bigger (considering she is a German Shepherd). I've loved every second I've spent with her, and I've learned to really appreciate the moments I get to be with her.
5. Forgive and forget
No dog is an angel, and I've had many experiences where we would have to scold our dog for either taking food off the counter or chewing up the sofa. Dogs know when you're upset at them, and whenever my dogs are scolded, they bounce back to their happy, joyful selves after a few minutes of sulking. I think that is a very valuable lesson for all people; to never hold a grudge.
6. Some of the best days are spent at home.
My dogs love to go to the dog parks and run errands with me, but they also love to just lay around the house on the couches and nap all day. It's fun to have days where you have a lot to do, but sometimes the best days are the low-key ones spent at your home.
