Any musical theater lover knows that some of the best expressions of love show up in musicals. Especially as a college student, there's no experience quite like discovering what it's like to be in love. The following are some of the best duets from musical theatre exemplifying different aspects of love.
1. "The Next Ten Minutes" from "The Last Five Years"
This beautiful Jason Robert Brown musical is about a couple who breaks up. Naturally, a soaring love duet deserves a spot somewhere. This duet in the middle of the show is simply stunning. Jamie simply asks Cathy to do life with him and take it ten minutes at a time. Cathy agrees, and the way they choose each other is incredibly endearing.
2. "As Long As You're Mine" from "Wicked"
Schwartz's duet, written for Elphaba and Fiyero when their time to be together finally arrives, is alluring and passionate. This duet is a great example of savoring moments with someone you love, and knowing that not every moment will last forever. It's also especially sweet when neither Elphaba or Fiyera actually thought they would get the chance to be together.
3. "If I Could Tell Her" from "Dear Evan Hansen"
This song is beyond sweet, and definitely depicts the shyness that people feel when it comes to expressing love. Being vulnerable is necessary when telling someone how you feel, but is not always easy. In this song, Evan Hansen is telling Zoey all the things he loves about her under the guise of telling her the good things her brother thought about her before he died.
4. "You Matter to Me" from "Waitress"
Sara Bareilles did an exceptional job with this song for "Waitress". This song talks about simply mattering to someone, and the wonders that it can do for people. A lot of times, people just need to be loved and feel like they matter to someone.
5. "I'll Cover You" from "Rent"
This is one of simplest and unique notions given by a broadway duet. Larson put the idea of promising to protect and care for someone in a pure and tender song. What could be sweeter?
6. "Take it Like a Man" from "Legally Blonde"
While this is not a stereotypical broadway love duet, O'Keefe and Benjamin's take on a developing relationship is refreshing. In one of the most underrated musicals, the Elle we all know and love takes Emmett shopping so he can impress his boss. Elle does it as "payment in kind" because she recognizes Emmett for the man he is, who saw much more to her than simply being a beautiful, blonde woman. The best part is that Elle makes sure Emmett knows she wouldn't change a thing about him.
7. "Ten Minutes Ago" from "Cinderella"
Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote a go-to musical theater piece for discovering love at first sight. This song is a thrilling moment in "Cinderella" that demonstrates how quickly two people can fall for one another. While perhaps the circumstance is a bit more romantic than how real love happens, people still know the feeling of only noticing one person while everyone else seems to fade away.
8. "All I Ask of You" from "Phantom of the Opera"
Andrew Lloyd Webber's love duet is another fantastic piece in which two people are simply asking each other for love. There is something so sweet and tender about desiring affection and reassuring each other that you will give it.
9. "Somewhere" from "West Side Story"
Bernstein's "Somewhere" is a song from one of my favorite classic musicals. It's a sad song of two people from different worlds longing for a way in which they can be together. The dream that the song presents perfectly depicts the peace that people hope to have when they're in love. In the song, Tony and Maria hope that somehow, somewhere they can simply be with each other without worrying about hatred and being from rival groups.
If you are ever in love and don't quite know how to express the feeling, maybe one of these songs can do the trick for you. We should all make more room for more exceptional storytelling in our lives, and learn how we can best love one another as human beings.
