The Ultimate Sad Girl Playlist

Now this list is not just your average Spotify playlist. This is going to be a list of the saddest songs, TV episodes, AND movies. Many hours and girl's nights after different breakups have contributed to this not basic list. So, grab your ice cream and tissues because I promise... after this list, you'll need them.

A Walk to Remember (Movie)

Nicolas Sparks is an evil genius. Something in his words that have been translated to the big screen gets me every time. All of his movies are a guarantee to make a girl cry, in all different ways, but this movie specifically leaves me sobbing every time. The way someone can care SO MUCH about a person to get all of their "list" done, even after knowing them for such a short time..... I'm already crying.

Me Before You (Movie)

ok so this one.... sure its the basic forbidden love, not being able to be together. But what really gets to me, is seeing the progression of Will's personality and his love for Lou grow throughout the movie and closer to- well I'm not going to spoil it. Just know it came too soon and in the most peaceful... yet tragic way. Thats all on that one.

My Sister's Keeper (Movie)

This movie. There are a multitude of reasons this movie makes my list, from the beginning of Anna's life to the progression of Kate's illness and the ending. OH THE ENDING. and then Alec Baldwin.... yeah bye.

Forrest Gump (Movie)

Although this 3+ hour-long movie is essentially a history lesson, it just so happens to also be my favorite movie of all time. Besides the obvious tearjerkers, and few deaths, I think the most heartbreaking moment is when Forrest meets little Forrest and with tears in his eyes asks Jenny if he is like his father.

Steel Magnolias (Movie)

This movie is an essential for all young women to watch. I aspire to have the friendship these women had, so when they had to come together for Sally Fields character and watch we quite literally have her emotional break down in a 5 minute scene over her daughters death was AWFUL AND I CRY EVERY TIME.

"100" - Criminal Minds (Television)

When I started this series, every single person gave me that look... and said wait till you get to episode 100. When I finished that episode my mouth had been hanging open with tears streaming down my face. One of THE MOST heartbreaking and emotional scenes I have ever watched and not only from a husband and wife relationship perspective but child and parent loss that was felt. An overall wreckage for all emotions.

"The Quarterback" - Glee (Television)

This episode was sad for the death of a character that we all fell in love with over the years. But the absolute heart-wrenching feeling knowing these emotions and songs sung with such feeling was for a real person and for the REAL relationships was so hard to watch. This episode really does get me, especially when Rachel/ Lea is singing her solo, broken. It leaves you broken.

"Flight" - Greys Anatomy (Television)

So adding to the obvious.. but really even if you've never seen Grey's this episode is SO sad. Having a group of people who's lives and jobs are saving people's lives feel so helpless and unable to save their own. I can't even get into it any further.

"That'll Be The Day" - This Is Us (Television)

Honestly, I come close to tears in just about every episode of this show, but this one in particular, revealing after 2 seasons how Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) dies. Its just one of those moments that you thought you saw coming, then was surprised when he survived and you know... but then once they all let their guard down in the hospital BAM, and that's how it happens. So so so rough.

"Papa's Got a Brand New Excuse" - The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Coming from a typically funny and light-hearted show, the moment in this episode that brings it to my list is just awful. Whether you have a similar situation to Will or not, seeing and possibly feeling this heartbreak by a parent is so hard to experience. Knowing that this scene was not scripted and came from Smith's real-life and emotions brought from off-set was much more powerful than before.

"Not About Angels" - Birdy (Music)

When I left out "The Fault in Our Stars" in the movie category, it was because I knew this song needed recognition of its own. The soft instruments accompanying the vocals of ANGELS (literally) and having TFIOS play in the background just really set an emotional scene.

"Travelin' Soldier" - The (Dixie) Chicks (Music)

This song takes you on an emotional rollercoaster and its a long one. When I listen to this song it's like you're watching a movie and probably could be pretty consistent with some Nicholas Sparks movie.

"When I Look At You" - Miley Cyrus (Music)

Miley, she does it again. Just like the other song above, I kept "The Last Song" out from the movies but I really associate this song with the whole movie and emotions that come along with it. She really did something as Ronnie Miller in this movie, and truly put an exclamation point on it with this song.

"Soon You'll Get Better" - Taylor Swift (Music)

To start, she is my all-time favorite singer, and although I didn't want to put her on this sad list with the obvious "All Too Well." This song is about her mother's cancer diagnosis was an obvious addition. Knowing she can't perform this song live without breaking down and had it recorded for a while but just couldn't record it makes it even more heartbreaking than it already is.

"Supermarket Flowers" - Ed Sheeran (Music)

That's it. That's all I have to say. If you know, you know.

Well, that was a doozy, and only scratched the SURFACE of the tear-jerking moments and songs at our disposal. So, if you ever need a good cry, please take a look at any of these listed, I promise you'll get there.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
