The Truth About Summer
Odyssey

In high school, when it came time for summer break it couldn't have been there sooner. You were more than ready for late nights with your friends at bonfires, long night drives with no destinations and especially no homework. You and your friends were able to enjoy summer with minimal responsibilities, maybe a few odds and ends for everyone here and there, but for the most part, your summer was free. Once you go off to college, you thought your summer would be the same right? Wrong. Coming home from college is a complete 180-degree turn from the expectations you had for your first summer home from college. If you were like me you had Pinterest boards with all the exciting adventures you wanted to go on and delicious food and treats you wanted to make. But the overwhelming reality came that there was no time to do those things.

We thought we could have the time of our lives and all of the freedom that we though summer brings. Again wrong, we were so off base there. Instead, we find ourselves working full time or more than one part-time job, taking summer classes, or being forced to do other things for our families or siblings. What kids who have already gone through their first summer home forgot to tell us was that we're always so busy. If you aren't busy, your best friends probably are. Timing is the biggest pain in trying to see one another. It is very hard for everything to fall in place like it did in the past. Previously you were probably able to text everyone the same day you wanted to have a bonfire and now everything has to be planned almost a week in advance.

Coming home from college puts us in a position of being happy we're home with all the things that are familiar to us, our houses, parents, pets and friends. But also being home makes us miss our school friends, the exciting weekends going out, the freedom we had with our friends. We almost feel guilty for being torn of wanting to be home or wanting to be at "home" in college. Our first summer home really just proves that we are adults and we don't always have time to have fun and follow through with our Pinterest boards. So because I have to adult now I am breaking up with you, summer.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
