On Tuesday, October 3rd, the world was graced with the release of Rupi Kaur’s latest book, The Sun and Her Flowers. Rupi never fails to take my heart in her writer's hands, squeeze it until it feels pain, then repairs it all over again. I connect so deeply to this book, especially to the theme of wilting, falling, rooting, rising, blooming. There's a reason I love the word "bean sprout;" it's because a sprout is the product of a seed that has fallen from a wilted plant, was submerged in the darkness of the earth, yet still managed to push through and rise above. Keep going, keep growing. So when I read this book, it felt like a piece of my heart came home. To say I love it is an understatement.
Here are five reasons you NEED to read this book:
1. Because it’s relatable
No matter who you are, I guarantee there's a poem in here that clicks with your soul.
2. Because it’s beautifully written
There's no denying that Rupi has quite a way with words.
3. Because Rupi is a low-key goddess
I mean...just LOOK at her.
4. Because the illustrations are AMAZING
Rupi does all the artwork by herself, and I'm contemplating getting one of her designs as a tattoo one day.
5. Because it reminds you that no matter what, you grow through what you go through.
The whole theme of the book is tied into nature, and it's divided into five parts: wilting, falling, rooting, rising, blooming. The message is heart-wrenching and clear: despite whatever happens that causes you to wilt and fall, you shall still be able to plant your roots and grow once again.
