Fans have waited months, and now it's finally here. "Pretty Little Liars 5 Years Forward"begins this week, and the series is in its twilight seasons. Unlike many fans, I haven't been on the "Pretty Little Liars" fan boat since day one. In fact, it wasn't until my freshman year of college that I began watching the show.
My first few episodes were viewed while my roommate and I ate Chinese food, trying to ignore the falling snow outside. But now I am absolutely hooked. I binge watched every season on Netflix, getting caught up for the new season. When I transferred to Misericordia, one of my first real conversations was with my now best friend, and it was about how we both love PLL and were so excited for it to resume. We still make it a point to watch together when we can.
So while I am incredibly excited for PLL to be back, I want to express something many fans have on their minds, and that is the fall finale. For those who have seen it, we know that A's identity has finally been identified, and it sure was an unexpected plot twist, one that was just a little too forced. ABC Family—excuse me, Free Form—is known for making statements on social issues in their shows. "Switched at Birth" addresses physical disabilities; "The Fosters" features two moms and a slew of former orphans that make up a happy, growing family. "Chasing Life" follows the story of a woman with cancer. ABC Family's desire to address real issues dates back to my middle school years when everyone raved over "Secret Life of the American Teenager," sending a much different message about teen pregnancy than MTV's "16 & Pregnant."
In a way, I understand the writer's intentions of writing in a transgender character, left at a psychiatric hospital by her mother and father, seeking revenge on the beloved younger sister. Yet it doesn't fit. Maybe I missed it, but there isn't much motive for Cece Drake to be after the Liars. Although I found the reveal to be a bit disappointing, especially since I have been reading the books during the off season, I'm hoping that "5 Years Forward"will bring both satisfaction and answers to the endless questions I have.
Along with finding out why Cece was after the Liars, I am dying to know what happens to everyone's relationships. The season ended with everyone heading different ways, off to universities around the country. Five years later, the girls will all have earned a bachelor's degree, and their relationships will have been tested. Who stays together, if anyone? What happened to A, and have they turned their lives around? How is Ali's family coping with finding out their daughter tried to kill their other daughter and her friends countless times? There are so many more questions, some I may not even know I have, and starting Tuesday, fans across the country will start getting their answers.
