No one had to tell me that incest was wrong. Truthfully, it was just something that I, along with everyone around me, just knew it was something not to be messed with.
So, imagine my surprise when I was almost immediately exposed to the concept of incest in the media. Now, many people will attempt to argue that step-siblings or adopted siblings are not technically siblings therefore it is not incest, to that I say that nothing good or justifiable comes after the word “technically.”
Shockingly, these examples of incest are not only present in that of “adult” television or films such as “Game of Thrones,” in fact my first memorable confrontation with the slightly disturbing topic of incest was in that of a Disney Channel television show that ran for four years and left me a very confused child.
I figured very early on that if this sort of behavior was present in a kid show, that the pattern would continue in more adult content. As I got older and my interests began to shift in the realm of entertainment, I saw the same storylines play out, just with some more grown-up elements thrown in.
Throughout the years, I began a (very long and ever-growing) list of films and television show that feature the “incest” storyline, and believe me when I saw it’s a long one.
1. "Star Wars" (1977)
What a massive "oops" by Luke and Leia in the original "Star Wars" film. Though they didn't know they were siblings when they hooked up, the writers most definitely knew what they were doing.
2. "The Blue Lagoon" (1980)
Oh, a very young Brooke Shields getting on with her cousin while stranded on an island. Nothing weird or nerve-striking about a little bit of cousin-cest.
3. "Flowers in the Attic" (1987)
Now, this one is weird. The entire plot is just one big "how many times can we make the audience feel like they're internally bleeding," with the sibling-on-sibling incest, the child abuse, and the poisoning. How could you possibly look away?
4. "Clueless" (1995)
I will admit, this movie is wildly iconic and the relationship between Cher and Josh wasn't technically incest at the time the relationship began, but like I said if you have to say technically, something is wrong there. Just because their parents divorced and they are no longer step-siblings, the idea is weird especially considering Josh has such a close relationship with Cher's father even after the divorce.
5. "Degrassi" (2001-2015)
"Degrassi" has had mild innuendos about incest throughout the number of years the show aired, but this was one of the most prevalent examples. Jake and Clare technically began dating prior to their parents' courtship, but once they were made aware the relationship should've ended. There are literally billions of people in the world who aren't your step-brother, find one of them.
6. "Life with Derek" (2005-2009)
Remember that Disney show that had you feeling really confused at a very young age? I give you "Life with Derek", the show that glorifies the constant sexual tension between two step-siblings, the show that's for children. Personally, there are hundreds of storylines that Disney could've run with, but they chose incest... Yikes.
7. "The Quiet" (2006)
Yeah, this movie is a hard pass. Step-siblings are gross, cousins are even worse, but a daughter-on-dad sexual relationship is so far past wrong I can't even begin explaining. I watched this movie in 2012 and have been scarred ever since. Oh, and when the daughter finally realizes the relationship is textbook-gross and she attempts to get away from him, her stepsister kills him and the two bury the body together...
8. "Gossip Girl" (2007-2012)

9. "True Blood" (2008-2014)
In the show's 7 years, there were many scandalous relationships to grace the screen, but the most controversial was that of Eric and Nora. The siblings were separated for many years, and what better way to make up for lost time than to have sex with your sister? Pretty much every other way is a better way to make up for lost time.
10. "17 Again" (2009)
Granted, Maggie had no idea that her crush was her father who somehow defied space and time to re-do high school when she pursued him, the scenario (again, by Disney) is still a little off-base. I get it, Zac Efron is a babe, but has his daughter really never seen a picture of her father from his teenage years? That's a bit peculiar if you ask me.
11. "Modern Family" (2009)
Just another example of some weird incest that is entirely unnecessary. Though Alex and Manny never actually acted, Manny had a very odd attraction to Alex, who is his niece. This is just weird, even if the feelings are not reciprocated and they are not biologically related.
12. "Game of Thrones" (2011-)
This very disturbing display of sibling-cest was the cause of many troubles in the past seasons of the show. In fact, the pilot episode featured a very aggressive sex scene between the two that resulted in an attempted murder in order to cover up the indiscretion... Seems like a lot of effort to cover up something that could easily be resolved by just not having sex with your sibling.
13. "The Fosters" (2013-)
The writers of "The Fosters" seem to really be rooting for Brandon and Callie. I, however, find the relationship rather irritating and contradictory to the show's core theme; that blood does not dictate whether or not someone is family. Truthfully, it seems as though Callie just enjoys doing problematic things, and what is more problematic than doing your foster-turned adoptive brother?
14. "How to Get Away with Murder" (2014-)
A major criterion for every season of "How to Get Away with Murder" is to end the season or mid-season with a jaw-dropping plot twist. Season two featured a plot twist that shocked everyone: The two siblings that the team was defending for murder were involved in a disturbing incestuous relationship, which raised suspicion and altered the motive in the eyes of the entire public. The two adoptive siblings were shady and disturbed, and the best part about the storyline is that literally no one was condoning it for once.
