Fall means Halloween, Thanksgiving, hot chocolate, back to school, and the best of television. Fall TV gives us the best new characters to love, universes to enjoy, grades to suffer. If you know anything about me you know that the one love of my life is TV. I love escaping through comedies, dramas, musicals, romances. Fall 2017 has done just that offering me a myriad of distractions from my daily life and education. Here are a few suggestions for all you fellow TV addicts.
Netflix:
1. Old: "Glee"
If you know me you know this was coming. "Glee" is my everything. Yet if there is ever a time to watch it, its the fall. There is something refreshing about constant new characters, oldies and self aware plot times. The fall is a time for new beginnings, or in this case New Directions.
2. New: "3%"
I started this one to brush up on my Portuguese and finished it because the plot and characters are incredible. I too grew tired of this dystopian science fiction trend, but "3%" does it differently. At only 8 episodes, you can finish it in a day and then spend in indefinite amount of time waiting for a possible second season.
Hulu
3. Old: "The Mindy Project"
Unfortunately, this beauty is coming to an end. Mindy Kaling plays one of the realest, most genuine characters ever, bringing joy, humor, and truth to the role of Dr. Mindy Lahiri a New York OB/GYN who is never afraid to be her crazy self. A relatable character, there is no one who can't find anything in common with her, or any of the other characters on the show.
4. New: "The Handmaid's Tale"
This show took me by surprise. I never expected something so subtly terrifying. It's not gory or violent, but it's frightening to see how near in the future this can occur. A dystopia where women are only there to procreate, "The Handmaid's Tale" simultaneously tells the story of Offred's previous life, as well as the current one she tries to escape.
CW
5. Old: "Riverdale"
The thing about "Riverdale" is that quality-wise, it's nothing new; it's a little cheesy and the acting isn't Oscar worthy at all. But it's entertaining, the plot is different, the characters are interesting, and don't get me started on the beauty of Betty and Jughead. If you miss "Pretty Little Liars", "Gossip Girl" and "One Tree Hill", "Riverdale" will never compare, but it will hold you over for a bit.
6. New: "Dynasty"
I hesitated putting this one in here because it is only three episodes in and hasn't received the best reviews. It's a remake of an old show for the 70s/80s also named "Dynasty" that my mom used to love. She says this new version isn't as classy or elegant and can in fact come across as trashy. I'm willing to give it a shot, especially after that murder cliffhanger in the pilot.
ABC/NBC
7. Old: "This Is Us" (NBC)
Do I even have to say anything about this? Never has a show made me feel so many things in such a short span of time. The characters, the emotion, the development. What started as a somewhat predictable drama suddenly became one of the most iconic shows of the 21st century.
8. New: "The Good Doctor "(ABC)
I'm going to be honest here and tell you that the only reason I wrote this article was so that I could rave about this show. It tells the story of Dr. Sean Murphy, a surgical resident with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Savant Syndrome. The show is incredibly accurate in it's portrayal of high-functioning Autism, as well as developing amazing side characters that love and challenge Sean. If you listen to any of my advice, please let it be to watch this show. I promise it is nothing like "Grey's Anatomy" (that I absolutely love). It is emotional, intelligent and a breath of fresh air.
