News has broken that Lionsgate will make the Last "Divergent" film a television movie instead of premiering in theaters as the last three were. IMDb website it already says that the finale will indeed premiere on home TVs. The stars of the film like Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort have spoken about this, and it is very shocking to them.
"Allegiant" did not do too well in the box office so it is not surprising that Lionsgate has pulled the fourth film from the big screen. Elgort who plays Caleb Prior practically hinted that the cast members may not return for the TV finale. He said in a Huffinton Post interview "It's really sad because the cast all really liked each other... we didn't say our goodbyes because we were expecting to do another one together."
As a fan of the books, I wish the movie industry stayed true to the books. The movies were nothing like Veronica Roth's novels at all. I enjoyed the films immensely, but I mostly made myself forget that the movies were based on a popular book series. Some of my friends are disappointed.
If it is true that the cast may not return, then how are the roles going to be filled? Also, it is said that following the finale a television series will be in the works. That is too much. With a television show in the works, Lionsgate might have just released the last film into theaters.
Another couple of reasons why the last film may have not done so well at the box office might be because the movies were never as popular as the Hunger Games franchise. The Hunger Games practically became sort of like a cult, but Divergent never lived up to it's other dystopian rival.
What is this television movie going to be like? Will it be an HBO movie without commercials or will this planned TV finale be on an NBC or ABC type channel with commercials, only lasting two hours. Or will it be a Television event? What will it even be like on the small screen? Will action sequences be the same as the other Divergent films have shown? There are many other questions that fans of movies series may have. Hopefully there will be more news and answers about the change of the last film in the next few months.
Young Adult novels are always turned into movies, but the change for the last Divergent film has shown that Young Adult novels-turned-movies may be dying out because big movie companies want to cash in, and make the books into movies. Here is what Hollywood can do: stop making Young Adult movies for a while because maybe in five years or so, they will become popular again. That is just a thought.
Hopefully "The Divergent Series: Ascendant" Television movie will not disappoint.
