As many of you may know, I am a Freshman here at the beautiful Creighton University. Upon my arrival, I was told to be cautious of what I would eat here. Obviously, we all want to be healthy and eat right. But one main concern that has been brought to my attention is the food that is served in the dining halls. For those that don't know, our dining hall food is provided for us by a company called Sodexo. They market quality, nutritious food. However, there are many among us Bluejays that would beg to differ.
While some people cry "nay", I must admit that Becker's food is fantastic. There, I've noticed that Sodexo puts a very strong effort in. The food there is made fresh, and it's always very good. It's also "unpopular", because not many people know about it, as well as the rumor that the food quality falls below Brandeis'. While it's not as amazing as Harper, it is definitely a close second. Harper is the dining hall that is hidden inside the Business school here at Creighton. It is at Harper that Sodexo pulls out all the stops.
I have never had so much as an unpleasant mouthful from Harper. I've noticed the workers there take so much more pride in what they do than the ones at, say, Brandeis. And before I continue, I want to make very clear that I am in no way trying to call out any Sodexo worker in particular. Nearly all of the Sodexo workers that I have encountered have been warm, gracious, and kind. One of the Sodexo workers at Brandeis, Regina, is one of my favorites. She always greets everybody with a genuine warm smile, and when she asks how we're doing, it's very obvious that she cares.
Back to Harper. There is no way to describe how amazing that gourmet food is. The food there is honestly A1 quality. There's actually a conspiracy going around that everything in the Business school is better because of the dark money that runs through it. Rumor has it that it is the unending flow of dark money that is what keeps the Eternal Flame from burning out. But I'm sure that's just a rumor. Or is it?
Now, for Brandeis. I have definitely had some quality meals here. Shoutout to the hash browns, and the guys who work with the big fry pans who cook that station's food directly in front of you. That station is always a great one. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. However, with the good, the bad must come. I have given the spinach wraps many chances over the few months I have been here.
I am unsure if it is the spinach wrap tortilla brand, or if that station should be avoided altogether. Or, it could be the lack of avocados available. But something just is not right. Again, it could just be the spinach wraps. But I have yet to hear praises for the other wraps available. Additionally, while I will chow down on a burger or chicken sandwich (those are the bomb, by the way), often times the more "cultured" foods they prepare leave much to be desired.
My friend received nachos and was so disappointed that I had to sample from hers. I too was disappointed. I once had a gyro there, and while it wasn't quite as Greek as it could have been, it was not too terrible. Also, I would not trust the salad there. I mean, sometimes it's fresh produce, and that is when it is very much lit to have a salad. But often times, the produce is very, very cold. And lacks the fresh crunch. I may be biased because I don't really like rabbit food. But I have definitely had better salads.
One comment that I have heard, repeatedly, is "Our $55K gets us THIS?" And many of us, myself included, ask ourselves that question every time we ingest yet another disappointing meal. I was well aware that I would miss my parents' cooking. But for the love of Saint Peter, this is getting ridiculous. I must reiterate that this is not an attack on any of the Sodexo workers. I seldom have any issues with any of them, and the few that I have had are very mild. I, and many others, just want to know one thing. Why can't Brandeis be more like Harper? As far as dining halls go, Brandeis has become the Gallagher of the Dining Hall World.
