Christmas is a special time of year. It's a time when we are given permission, regardless of what's going on around us, to feel happy. Music is obviously a big part of enhancing that happy feeling. Throughout my life, music has held a very special place in my heart.
Needless to say, Christmas music is a genre I absolutely love. Here are the five Christmas albums that never fail to put me in the spirit!
5. Vince Guaraldi Trio - "A Charlie Brown Christmas"
The Charlie Brown Christmas special is one that we've all watched growing up. It's one of those specials that has stuck around through generations. It has a timeless quality. Therefore, the beautiful orchestration by Vince Guaraldi sets that Christmas mood perfectly.
4. The Jackson 5 - "Jackson 5 Christmas Album"
The Jackson 5 are an iconic part of music history. Michael Jackson would go on to become the King of Pop, a legendary figure in his own right. Their Christmas album remains a staple on Christmas radio today. From their renditions of children's favorites like "Frosty" and "Rudolph," to their stunning version of Stevie Wonder's "Someday at Christmas," this is essential listening.
3. Gloria Estefan - "Christmas Through Your Eyes"
Gloria Estefan's original Christmas single, "Christmas Through Your Eyes," was first available on her 1992 "Greatest Hits" album. In 1993, the singer released the song on a full Christmas studio album. The album features brilliant orchestration, a beautiful choir, and some songs in Spanish. Standouts are her rendition of "Silver Bells" and the wonderfully jazzy "Let It Snow."
2. Various Artists - "A Very Special Christmas"
If you ever wanted to know what the center of eighties pop looked like, this is your definitive album. From Whitney Houston to Bruce Springsteen to Madonna, this album features a who's who of eighties pop culture. Proceeds from this album benefited the Special Olympics. Houston does a beautiful version of "Do You Hear What I Hear" and Madonna stuns on "Santa Baby." And to top it all off, Keith Haring illustrated the front cover.
1. Mariah Carey - "Merry Christmas"
Mariah Carey has become known as the Queen of Christmas. Her festiveness knows no bounds and it even led to a second Christmas album in 2010. Her first Christmas album has become a must-have in every home at Christmas time. Her gospel-influenced versions of "Silent Night" and "O Holy Night" take you to church without even leaving your house. And, of course, it includes her original number one classic, "All I Want For Christmas Is You."
