Thanksgiving is hands down one of the most underrated holidays--people like to jump from Halloween straight to Christmas. (Thanksgiving? Who's she?) Granted, we still celebrate Thanksgiving, but it's with Christmas boxes waiting to be unpacked if they haven't been already. And don't get me wrong, I love Christmas season, but what I want to know is why people are practically skipping Thanksgiving for the "better" holidays.
Sure, Halloween has costumes and Christmas has presents and the Fourth of July has fireworks, but Thanksgiving has no expectations. You don't have to worry about bringing anything but yourself and maybe food. There's nothing to do but hang out and eat. And hide from all talk of politics, but that can be said for any family function.
Thanksgiving is the best holiday. I'm biased, since it's my favorite, but still. All that is required is that you show up and eat a bunch of food. My family is as crazy and dysfunctional as the next, but it's a ton of good food and occasionally weird traditions. One side of my family makes Christmas ornaments on Thanksgiving that get hung on the chandelier until Christmas. The other side writes what they're grateful for on a tablecloth, which doesn't sound that interesting until you realize we have to ask three- and four-year-olds what they're thankful for (everything from toys to cows to ketchup).
I know the original Thanksgiving was...not great, but it has turned into a day of good food and no expectations. Maybe it's the college student in me talking, but that's the best kind of holiday we can ask for. This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for the holiday of Thanksgiving, for giving us massive amounts of food, time off and away from school, and for being the only major holiday with no expectations beyond eating the food put in front of me.
