A Thank You Letter To My Sorority

Because it's so much more than just "paying for your friends"

A Thank You Letter To My Sorority

Tonight at dinner with my best friend, who also happens to be my roommate, we talked about how crazy it is that a single decision can completely alter your life. Whether it's what college you decide to go to, whether or not you decide to say hi to someone, or even something as simple as the way you walk to class, literally every choice you make, big and small, affects the course of your life in some way.

One choice in my life that I'm particularly grateful for is my decision to join a sorority. I decided to come to the University of Georgia even though my family and I currently live in Indiana (which is about an eleven-hour drive away if you want to be exact)! Coming to UGA, I didn't know a single person, but I knew that going through sorority recruitment would be a great way to meet people. But little did I know just how much being in a sorority would completely transform my college experience and the direction of my life.

One of the main reasons that I want to thank my sorority is because it led me to the girls in it! Each day I am blown away by the kindness and love that my sisters show to each other and to me. When you need to vent, someone is there. When you can't find the right shoes for an outfit, one of your sister's closets is open. I've made so many true friendships in my sorority that make me question what I considered to be a friendship before, and that deserves a million thanks.

Along with the friendships that my sorority has given me, being a member of a sorority has motivated me to be the highest version of myself academically, socially, and mentally. Being surrounded by women that all have their own struggles and stories is both inspiring and humbling. I will always be thankful to my sorority for pushing me to be the best I can be while simultaneously boosting others.

Although sometimes an overlooked aspect of Greek life, being in a sorority shows you a glimpse of just how many different people there are in college. I find that the beauty of being in a sorority is that despite our differences, somehow we all fit perfectly together as members of the same sorority, embracing our differences and encouraging one another to be yourself. So thank you to my sorority for being an environment that not only accepts me but encourages me to live authentically.

Now that I'm finishing up my sophomore year of college, I can confidently pinpoint my decision to go greek as the moment that started it all! Every Monday when I go to chapter I can't help but feel so proud to be a member of my sorority. I feel so lucky that I found a special place on Milledge Avenue that feels like home when my home is 750 miles away. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
