Dogs are truly amazing. I am constantly under the belief that humans don't deserve dogs; they're just such good boys (and girls!). I've had my dog (pictured above) since I was eight years old. I literally cried saying goodbye to him when I left for college. So in honor of seeing him in just a few short days, I decided to write an article about why dogs truly are humans' best friends.
1. They actually get excited to see you.
Even seeing you after just a few short hours is bliss for them. I know when I came home for break after first semester, my dog was ecstatic. It's like they're being reunited with a long-lost relative, and their happiness is contagious.
2. You take care of each other when you're sick.
Cleaning up after a sick dog might just be the equivalent of holding back a best friend's hair while they're not feeling well. It's not enjoyable, but you do it because you love them. Also, dogs can sense when you are sick and usually offer a little extra comfort and love.
3. They've seen you at your worst.
All your in-house breakdowns, angriest moments, fights with parents and friends, heartbreaks, and loss...they've been there through it all. And they never once loved you less for it.
4. But they also have seen you at your best.
From college acceptances to graduation to engagements and marriage, dogs always are there to celebrate with you in the happy times. While you're hugging those around you and calling everyone to tell the news, your dog is also there excitedly wagging its tail and smiling (literally--have you ever seen a dog smile? It's adorable).
5. They know your deepest secrets.
Talking to dogs about life problems is great because you know that information will go nowhere. Ever. Plus, it's good to just get things off your chest when you feel like no one else is listening. Dogs are always there, and they can tell when you're sad or out of it. Moreover, they give a little extra comfort in your down times and always offer a furry shoulder to cry on.
6. They gladly go through life with you.
For me, I've had my dog since I was eight years old (as mentioned at the beginning of the article). We quite literally grew up together. He saw me through my last few years of elementary school, junior high with my frizzy hair and prominent braces (yikes--it was a rough time), high school with all the drama and relationships, and finally saw me off to college. He's been with me for all the major life events thus far, and I plan on him sticking around to see many more.
7. They're always down for an adventure.
Really, is anything more fun than going on a nice long walk with your dog, or spending a day out on the town together? What about how excited they get when you say, "You wanna go for a ride?" Or looking over to see them in the passenger seat sticking their head out the window with the wind blowing through their fur, without a care in the world? Those are the best moments, hands down.
8. They offer emotional support.
I'm a big believer in therapy dogs. In fact, I've considered applying to get one since my college is pet-free, except for therapy animals! During finals week, therapy dogs are brought to the library and it's great. Dogs are great. Period.
9. They make really good models for your social media.
I mean...this one is self-explanatory. How many times have I shown dogs off on Snapchat, Facebook, etc...? The answer is a lot. They're just photogenic creatures! And they make for a good Instagram feed.
10. At the end of the day, you're their best friend, too.
Nothing can compare to the bond a human has with their dog. You're the alpha, the one they look up to for support and care and sustenance. They rely on you just like like you rely on them. The popular phrase says dogs are "man's best friend", but I believe that we humans are dogs' best friends, as well. And I wouldn't want to have it any other way.
