I have always been, and will always be, a summer child. My strongest, fondest, and happiest memories all happened during the summer. I was up before the sun, and sneaking back outside at night. I didn't care if I was sitting on the porch roof outside of my bedroom window, sandy and salty on the beach, or sleeping on a blanket in the backyard-as long I was outside, under the sun, or under the stars. In those summer months, I hardly slept, and I spent more time awake, taking in every little detail about summer and memorizing it all. I spent my days in a bathing suit and overalls, my hair in messy braids my mama had done days before, barefoot and sunkissed. It was never too hot for me, whether I was swimming in the ocean, riding my bike outside the neighborhood boundaries, or running through yards. My mama called me Wildchild because she couldn't keep me inside, and I was happiest running around dirty and free. Everyone else called me Pocahontas, with my bare feet, my dark hair in braids, and my skin getting so dark I was almost black. My Cherokee blood gave my skin that reddish tone, making me look more like Pocahontas with each passing day. As I got older, summer still brought out that wild-child-Pocahontas-spirit, but I spent my days surfing at the beach or lifeguarding at the local pool. I still hardly slept, but instead of spending nights outside alone, I had friends to keep me company, go on new adventures with, and create more fond summer memories.
