When it comes to shows, just like my books, oftentimes I'm always the type to start them and take forever to finish them. A few weekends ago, I finally finished Sex and the City and I can't stop thinking about it.
At the time of being a little kid I always thought New York was this great place, and then for a while, I didn't want to have anything to do with it except visit every now and then. However, I'm contemplating making New York one of my places to live in the future, especially with some of the publishing companies it seems already guaranteed that I'd want to. Now though, I might really want to.
In the meantime though, I'm going to be figuring myself out in D.C. New York may have to wait a little while.
There's Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York, and last but not least, Carrie Bradshaw. When The Carrie Diaries (2013) had come out, Carrie being played by AnnaSophia Robb, which had definitely been one of my favorite shows, I later realized after finishing that show that it was the prequel to Sex and the City (1998). Fast forward, my friend introduces me to SATC and I finally gave it a go.
So in honor of finishing this show, that definitely had some of its ups and downs, I figured I might as well share some of the reasons why you should watch it if you haven't already. If you did, then maybe you can certainly relate to the points below and therefore, we can be best friends.
1. Four women still figuring life out
GiphyOne of my favorite parts about SATC is the fact that they are all grown women trying to navigate the city life. Even though they are in their late-30s/early-40s, it just goes to show that maybe, we never truly have everything figured out, but we keep moving on.
2. Carrie Bradshaw’s wardrobe
GiphyWhen I was little I didn't want to wear anything that was seen as eccentric, but in high school and now in college I started to get out of the shell. I'd pair some crazy patterns together, not really care how much my hair looked, and I'd go with the flow. I'd like to thank my mom for being a fashion icon, I pretty much raid her closet.
When it comes to Carrie's looks (even Sarah Jessica Parker's outfits to this day) and her Manolo Blahnik's, you might just be willing to put some of the most eccentric outfits together and still be able to rock it in the streets. I find myself looking for the most cute and unique outfits, especially while I was watching the show. Even now, I can't help myself thinking, "What would Carrie wear?"
3. The significant others
GiphyWhile I have some thoughts on how Carrie treated some of the men in her life, half the time she'd be way too dramatic for my taste, I kind of liked the care-free lifestyle of the four girls and how they managed to be girl bosses while also having fun while they did. Let's not even go in depth about Big.
All four women went through their own relationship problems, and all four women managed to kick butt and handle each person like a boss...somewhat.
4. Speaking of relationships…Living your best life
GiphySamantha Jones is a one-woman show when it came to outdoing everybody and enjoying her life with the guys who came in and out of her life. While being the oldest of the four, she did her own thing. Half the time she didn't even care about what people thought, and that's a whole mood.
5. NYC itself
GiphyNYC in the 90s looked wild, and even to this day it still is. These four women made it seem like NYC was the place to be. There were certainly their fare share of being in the midst of rude people, but they somehow managed to shrug it off, as I'm sure you'd have to in a city like that.
6. Career struggles
GiphySometimes it's a struggle figuring out what you want to do. Whether you want to work in public relations, as an art dealer, a lawyer, or a columnist, these women powerhouses range from the creative to the analytical. You never know what this show might inspire you to do in your future.
7. Friendships
GiphyDespite the ups and downs, it seems that these four adult women know how to go through it all. They have brunch together, often go out as much as possible as they can together, they confront each other about their issues and even admit the others' faults while still being supportive. They are live and carefree, doing what they love with the support of one another. Not to mention, they all balance one another out personality wise.
It makes you a bit nostalgic or longing for a solid group of four that makes you want to be on the move and experience some of the craziest of moments.
While many TV shows and movies are starting to realize how important inclusivity on the big screen and TV's are, hopefully, they just keep coming so others can find themselves in the character's mindset. However, I'm glad Sex and the City opened this new world for me about what may or may not actually happen as I continue to grow up. After all, most shows/movies are oftentimes based on actual events.
To Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda for being so chic, empowering, and taking NYC by each episode.
