A New Year Does NOT Mean A New You
New years motivate you not to change, but to keep on living.
My opinion on New Years
To be honest, I do not understand why everyone says "New Year, New Me". If you ask me, it should be "New Year, Evolved Me". Whenever a new year starts, I only feel grateful to make it to see another year. Considering the depressing crap that goes on around me including young ones dying, me and my family not being on the same page, and shady ass people, I honestly don't get that hype when a new year starts. Instead, I focus on what I can do to be better than the previous year. Especially this one. In 2018, a lot of shit hit the fan. The death of Stan Lee, Stephen Hillenburg, and XXXTentacion really struck a nerve in me. These were people that really had in impact on my life. Stephen Hillenburg created the one show on Nickelodeon that made up a good part of my childhood. XXXTentacion helped me realize that we all go through our own personal shit. Stan Lee made characters that inspired me to be more than who I am now. Them being gone really broke my heart. But, as I mentioned in one of my previous articles, the heartbreaking times I went through this past year are what motivated me to keep moving forward and being better than the next day. I made this my goal in 2017 and have been living by it since then. I don't need a new year to start to change. I chose to make a change because I actually saw my faults and chose to do something about them. I honestly can't understand why people wait until a new year starts to refresh themselves, especially when most people don't live up to the resolutions they made. I mean, don't get me wrong, I didn't either, but I'm trying. When you come up with a new years resolution, don't try to change yourself completely, but, focus what you can do to be better. God made you who you are for a reason and that part will never change. What can change is how you utilize the skills and attributes you were given the moment you were born.
What are my New Year Resolutions?
I did make some resolutions for the new year because I've been trying to do these for a while. I just still working on them at this point. My first new years resolution is to be more chill and not take things to seriously. I realized recently that I take things a little too personally when it's not that big of a deal. I recently was a desk assistant in one of the residence halls at Shippensburg University. It was easy money. All I did was sit at the desk and do homework. But I made it more difficult for myself because I didn't like most of the residents. They were all first years and most of them were rude and it stung a vain in me. What made it worse was some of the RAs that I worked with. One wouldn't stop glaring at me and another was fake as hell. She was pretending to be nice when in reality, she was a bitch. Because of this, I was less motivated to work and I left a shift too early. As a result, my supervisor forced me to resign. During my last shifts I realized I take shit more seriously than needed, which is why I am currently trying to find my chill and just be less anxious and more confident of certain situations. My second new years resolution is to dress more presentable. When I first came to college, I thought to myself, " I have my freedom. I can where whatever the hell I want". I've been rocking sweatpants and hoodies most of my time in college because I was too lazy to change into more presentable clothes. But I realized that even though looks don't always matter, they do have a small effect on how people see you. Unfortunately, I felt like sweatpants and hoodies said," Screw everyone. I'm anti-social", which was not the message I wanted to send because I like meeting new people and socializing. So, I'm currently working on how to be more presentable with the clothing I wear.
What is my point?
New Years Resolutions are not to change you completely, but to make you better than prior. Most people don't understand that. They say, "New Year, New Me", without having any idea what that really means. I'm telling you guys to, but don't make promises to yourself that you can't keep. And if you want to change, don't just tell people that you'll change. Actually go through with it. It may not be easy, I know. But if you really mean that you want to change, in time, you'll reach your goals.
