I dare you to pick up a random millennial's phone and try to find one without the infamous "dating apps" Bumble and Tinder. I'll admit, I even had Bumble on my phone for a hot second when a friend of mine from high school encouraged me to download it. (It has however since found its way off my phone.)

Maybe it is because of my parents' love story or because I'm not clever enough to create witty messages but I just did not like these apps. I also have the irrational fear that every man on the site is an ax murder in disguise. Curious to see what other college women thought (am I the only one with this odd fear) I asked around, determined to hear other preferences, stories, and even warnings.

1. "I got my dream job through Bumble."

Well, I did hear they have upgraded the app to include jobs and friends, but that wasn't the case here. One girl heard about a job opening through a guy she met on Bumble. She got all the juicy information about the worksite and she liked what she heard enough to apply and get the job.

2. "Bumble is the way to go, especially if you accidentally swipe right."

How awkward is it when you accidentally swipe for a guy on Tinder, and then they messages you? Bumble is great because if you accidentally match with someone the ball is in your court, you do not have to message him.

3. "My mom got a hold of both my Tinder and Bumble."

No lie, thinking her daughter should branch out, she swiped right, and this girl woke up to plenty of new matches. Wow, give it up for Mom, with serious game. However, I am not sure if we should thank her mom or have this girl change her password.

And speaking of Moms,

4. "He approached me while I was with my mom."

I would like to think our parents do not live under rocks, at least I know for a fact mine don't. My mom even has more Instagram followers than I do. One girl told me that some guy she matched with on Tinder walked up to her while she was with her mom and exclaimed: "Hey, I think we matched on Tinder." She quickly denied ever using the app until later getting her shit called on by the guy via the app.

5. "Tinder is great, especially if you are on the rebound."

Depending on your preference, you could be using Tinder to avoid feeling lonely or for that casual hookup. I girl said never once talked to the person again after they met in person.

6. "These apps are a great way to build your self-confidence."

We all fear rejection so dating apps are a great way to have some practice without revealing who you truly are. These apps allow us to create an online persona, allowing us to feel confident when we match with a guy, without having to truly purser anything.

7. "We were friends first, and now we have been dating for six months."

I am a sucker for these stories, friendship turned relationship. It is straight out of a cheesy romantic comedy. One friend said she swiped right and matched with a guy on Bumble, but because of certain rules in a club they belonged to, they couldn't do anything. Instead, they formed a close friendship until they were able to officially start dating. Now they are going on 6 months, talk about adorable.

8. "He saw me while driving around town."

I guess that's a risk you take when you're using an app which requires your location settings to be turned on. One friend told me a story about her Tinder bio giving away her quirky and identified habits like singing in the car. One guy even messaged her saying "I think I saw you in your car on Elm Street* today."

9. "He racked up a huge bar tab when drinks were only $5 dollars."

I'll just leave this here and let you think about it. Here is some advice, do not take some random guy to a formal event.

10. "He looked familiar, but I couldn't place him."

A good friend of mine saw a guy while we were out shopping. The entire time she kept saying she knew him from somewhere. Too afraid to approach him, she let it slide and forgot about him. That is until he sent her a message on Tinder. Her bio had some funny vine quote and he called her out for it. Definitely a good laugh.

11. "We tell people we met at a coffee shop, in truth it was through Tinder."

Whatever works for you, right? She tells people he saw her and secretly bought her coffee. Of course, that isn't the true story. Granted this was a common occurrence back when Tinder was exclusively for casual hookups, but I do not think there is anything wrong with meeting on one of these social apps. In my opinion, these apps just make a city feel a little smaller, even weeding out some of the crazies.

12. "I used Tinder to boost my Instagram following."

Give it up for creative marketing and Instagram analytics! My co-worker, a Miami based model revealed she linked her Tinder to Instagram. Her goal, have the guys message her through Instagram. She said her follower count jumped over 100 people in a week. Funny story, she even matched with someone verified and they have been talking and following one another for a few months now.

13. "It was all a lie!"

Talk about a warning story! A friend of mine revealed she matched with what seemed to be an ideal guy. He took AP classes, raised abroad, had a full ride to college and even played football. After meeting a mutual friend she learned none of it was true, it was all a lie. Needless to say, she is not fond of these apps where you could easily create a false persona.

Whether or not you use Tinder, Bumble, Christian Mingle or JDate there are bound to be successes and horror stories. There is an element of fun to casually swiping on your phone with the deep-seated hope a prince might find his way on to your screen, or the hope you will find someone who doesn't repulse you and have some reckless fun for a night.
