"Of all flowers, methinks a rose is best." — William Shakespeare
"I walk around like a skeleton last night, confused and alone. Who was I kidding, I can't get past you. You are the cops, you are my student loans."
Spooky season is here! It's time to carve pumpkins, hang up decorations, and listen to some great Halloween music. Here are some songs to jam to this October other than "The Monster Mash."
First, this song starts off with the voices of Linda, Bob, and Gene from Bob's Burgers saying to turn this band into a "lean, mean, Mom Jeans, revenge machine." Secondly, the title itself being "Edward 40hands" is enough for it to land on this Halloween playlist because now I have the need to watch "Edward Scissorhands." Thirdly, this song just sounds like fall, but that may just be me.
If you like soft indie music Teen Suicide is where it's at. Honestly, their whole "DC Snuff Film/Waste Yrself" album is qualified to make it onto this Halloween playlist. "So haunt me, haunt me, haunt me, OoO."
Looking for something more grungy than the songs above? Something a more pop punk? Then Milk Teeth is what you've been looking for.
Neutral Milk Hotel's "Two-Headed Boy" is a very different type of song than those on this playlist. Not only is it all acoustic, but their songs are often defined as psychedelic folk and you most definitely get that folk vibe here.
This song is for is for all those Front Bottoms fans looking for a song that sounds upbeat on the surface until you pay attention to the lyrics and you hear the emo lyrics. "I walk around like a skeleton last night, confused and alone. Who was I kidding, I can't get past you. You are the cops, you are my student loans."
Who doesn't love a song that starts with an accordion? It sure does a good job at sounding eerie. "Fluorescent store lights, you shine through the night Illuminate my pores and you tear me apart. Mercy on me, would you please spare me tonight? I'm tired of this searching, would you let me let go?"
What can I say? Teen Suicide is the perfect indie band for Halloween.
Car Seat Headrest is the epitome of low-fi with "Death at the Movies" being no exception. "The hero stands up and the blood rushes out of his head, but you can still see him breathing after he's dead and after the soul is gone, his body's back to himself, and you'll say 'Oh, who is he? I've seen him in something else.'" Nothing is creepier to me than hearing the National Anthem after the lyrics depict this scene at what I always envision to be a drive-in movie theater.
A Philadelphia band that most certainly has that Philly sound ingrained into them, Slaughter Beach, Dog's song "Monster" is a smooth song about a family made up by Modern Baseball's Jake Ewald. "There are monsters everywhere I turn."
There is nothing more Halloween than a song with a music video shot in a graveyard. While this song doesn't give off any Halloween vibes vocally I just couldn't let go of the scene where Lindsey Jordan just stands there playing her red guitar.
You can't deny the love.
Over the years, there have been some true icons in the limelight for not only their unique personalities but their friendships with other people. Here are the top 10 best buds of all time:
What an unlikely duo. Even though at times Michael wants to rip Dwight's head off, we really don't see Michael more like himself than when he's in Dwight's presence. Their support and need for one another, even if it's underlying at times, is what true friendship really means.
Sam's undying respect and admiration for John are what true friends should strive for. During battles and times of emotional hardship, they always have each other's back, even if it means risking their lives.
The way this duo works together is enough to make you root (ha!) for them through ever movie. With Rocket's skills and Groot's size, together, they are a force to be reckoned with.
Once again with an older-brother complex, this pair of friends hits you hard in the toughest times. If you didn't shed a tear in the almost final scene in "Avengers: Infinity War" (you know which one I'm talking about), I can't trust you.
We love a good 90's pairing, especially ones that never take themselves too seriously. The shenanigans these friends share will make you both laugh and cry a bit. No matter how badly one of them may try to become independent, they always come running back to the other.
These best buds can make you belly-laugh so hard until you can't breathe. The things that come out of these guys' mouths are sometimes just out of this world. Alone, they have some of the best one-liners, and together, they share some of the best dialogue in the show, hands down.
Together through it all, no matter how far one of them may stray, they always find their ways back to one another with support and a good 'ole bro hug.
Together, they will have each other's backs till the end of time. They may date other people, but this bro-love runs deep.
I mean, honestly, how can you not die over this pairing? Steve talks on the role of the older brother (really, the mom figure) and watches over Dustin with everything in him. Also, the way Dustin looks up to Steve, even in sometimes a very joking manner, is what a true friendship is.
I'd also like to give an honorable mention to Dustin and Dart. I originally had them down together for this title but that relationship truly is a rocky one.
8. You think you are so smart even if you are definitely not.
We all went through that obsessive phase at some point during the fad. Trivia Crack, in a way, changed who we are today because it taught us all many valuable lessons that we can apply to our lives. Even if you no longer play the game, I am sure you will find this relatable and refreshing. Allow your mind to take you back to the times of spinning rainbow wheels.
So many people put pressure on how high of a level they could reach. None of the numbers really mattered because it just showed everyone how much time you spent playing the game. That was not always a good thing especially if people had full-blown obsessions and extremely unrealistic levels.
The timer ticking slowly down to give you another life seemed to last an eternity sometimes. Another test of patience was to see how long it would take people to play you back. I constantly wanted everyone to play me back instantaneously, but sometimes even waiting ten minutes seemed too long of a wait.
All those pesky ads and videos really disrupted my flow while playing. I often counted down the time until I could skip them because I was also too cheap to pay for no more ads. Each time one showed up, my entire gaming mode would get distracted which could affect my scores.
Each time someone would challenge me, I would jump on the chance. It motivated me because I wanted to answer every question correct to seem superior. Also when I would lose a character, it would hurt me on an emotional level because I was so invested in the challenge. Do not worry because I have recovered since those losses.
You were forced to stay in constant connection because you had to keep playing the game. If you let one take too long or expire entirely, it would hurt your friendships. Even complete strangers felt close to you because of all the rounds you played together.
Want more lives? Pay money. Want more gems? Pay money. Want more money? Pay money. Get my point?
No one used the message feature anyway unless it was to bug a friend to play you back. The idea of talking to someone through the app just seemed like something no one wanted to do even in the slightest.
Even if you lost 12 matches in a row, a part of you would still want to rematch them to try all over again. Giving up was never an option because forfeiting would hurt your pride. It was better to just lose by getting everything wrong than to never have that chance to answer incorrectly.
My strength was the Entertainment category because I almost always got those answers correct each round. Whenever I would go for a character, Pop would be my first pick no matter what. The next question is how many times does it have to remind me that sports is my worst category? I definitely got the message, but thank you for the reminder, Linda.
You never know where it will land next, but you are looking forward to having the experience. You just hope for that happy crown to keep coming around.
You should just go download the app again because you know this brought up some valuable memories. Happy quizzing!
With a lack of direction, I decided that this summer was the summer for God to come in and do whatever He wanted with my life.
At the end of the school year, I assumed that I'd be back in my hometown surrounded by family and working as a CNA (certified nursing assistant). I assumed that I'd spend my free time reading and sunbathing. I truly thought that I'd spend my last collegiate summer doing what I had been the other 3 times.
However, a month in and I am living in Charlottesville. I have a job at a garden center. The friend that I was planning to spend a lot of time with had to go home indefinitely. This is certainly not what I expected.
I really can't tell you why I decided to come back to Charlottesville. My parents weren't exactly happy, but I was set in my decision. At that point, I didn't have a job. I was literally coming back to do nothing. I had one friend left in town. I had never driven in Charlottesville before. Why in the world did I decide to uproot everything and leave my comfort zone?
I have no clue what is going on, but I know God is behind it all.
Once I arrived in Charlottesville to an empty house and nothing set to do, I panicked a little bit. What in the world did I just do? I have to cook for myself and drive places. I have to buy groceries. What do I do with my life?
Yet, during all this panic, I also had an unexplainable peace. With the lack of direction, I decided that this summer was the summer for God to come in and do whatever He wanted with my life. I prayed that He would point me to what He wanted me to do and to give me the ability to trust Him in it.
The first week was weird. I walked to Starbucks a lot. I did a lot of quiet times (with my new bible). I read a lot. I started watching "The Office." However, I was getting bored. I needed something more active to do with my summer.
It made sense to look for CNA jobs, but in my heart, that was the last thing I wanted to do. I decided to apply at Barnes and Noble (my bucket list job), but that was a dead end. While looking for jobs, I ran across a position for garden maintenance, and on a whim, I decided to apply. I had never gardened before, I had rarely found myself outdoors for the fun of it, and I had never heard of the place, but before I knew it, I had a job that I was slated to start in two days. Cool.
I've only worked there for a bit, but it's fun. It's hot and sometimes physical, but I get to be in nature, and I'm usually by myself (my introvert dream). I find myself getting to talk to God and really appreciate the world He made.
On days off, I frequent Barnes and Noble. I hang out with pals. I do my quiet times. I go to Book Club. I'm happy here.
I still don't know God's full purpose for the summer. I may never know. But I am living it, I am enjoying it, and I'm using the freedom from stress to figure out what I believe and what is important to me.
I don't like change, yet this summer, everything has changed. I've never gardened in my life, but now it's my job. I hate driving, but here, I drive daily. There's no way that I alone decided to lead my life in this direction.
This summer, I am consciously letting God take the lead. I am stepping out of my comfort zone and conquering my fears. I can't wait to see what all happens.
Or at least see yourself as the hero you once imagined you would be.
Be the adult that 10-year-old you needed. Be the role model you always wanted but never had. Or be the role model you once had, but better.
I can distinctly remember the adults that shaped my life and my who I am as a person, for better or for worse. Some were teachers, others coaches. I had a variety of cousins, aunts and uncles I looked up to, as well as my parents.
If you are a teacher, be the teacher that walks into their job smiling, regardless of what the past day held for you. Be the teacher that encourages your students. Be the teacher that inspires your students to want to do their best.
If you are a music and arts teacher, cultivate your students' creativity. Let your students see your creative side. Do whatever you can to discourage the idea that some are inherently creative while others are not. Show your students that each and every one of them has an "artsy" bone in them, no matter the mode in which it is released.
If you are a coach, be the coach that knows how to coach and not just how to yell. Be the coach that gives everyone a fair chance while also encouraging a healthy competitive spirit among your athletes. Be the coach that teaches your athletes the importance of hard work. Most importantly, be the coach that lets their athletes fail; do not encourage the "participation trophy" spirit and belief.
If you are a celebrity, use your influence for the good. Do not promote unhealthy lifestyle habits. Foster and develop healthy relationships for all your adoring little fans to look up to.
If you are an aunt or uncle, be the aunt or uncle you wish you had. Be that "fun" relative who is quick to hug the second they see the kids and even quicker to sneak them an extra treat. Never forget your nieces' and nephews' birthdays.
If you are a parent, do not forget that. Above all, you are a parent. Never neglect your kid(s). Do whatever you can to give them the best life possible. Always hug and kiss good morning and good night. Aspire to be a better parent than your parents were, in any possible way.
You may not realize it, but you significantly impact each and every person you come in contact with. If we all lived as the adults our 10-year-old selves needed, the world would be a much better place. Better yet, if we were the adults that our 10-year-old selves once imagined we'd be, we would shape today's youth in unprecedented ways.
On days where it may seem like you are failing to succeed in this "adult" world, think about the role models you had as a child. Put yourself in their shoes and try to imagine the struggles they went through. And then think about the profound effect they had on your life regardless of all of that. If you're being the adult 10-year-old you needed in one way or another, then I think you could say you're doing just fine.
