Your guide to beginning to live without carbs.

If I told you there was a diet that cut out almost all carbs, you would probably ask "why the hell anyone would do that??".

Images of glorious mashed potatoes, creamy mac and cheese, and fresh bread would pop into your head. That is what I used to think about the Keto diet when I heard it was practically no carb. Now, I am so glad I started on this diet.

So, what is Keto? The Keto diet is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carb diet. Typically the human body uses carbs as the main source of energy. The short and sweet explanation of Keto is that when you take carbs away, it forces your body to burn fat. If you would like to know more science behind it, check out this link!

Keto helps you lose weight, feel better, and scientifically have better brain function. I chose to start this diet because of being prediabetic and having PCOS my body has a lot of health risks. Getting healthier can help me change my life. It could help you too.

Let me start my tips by saying I was a carb lover. Bread was my best friend. I could not imagine a meal without carbs. It was hard saying goodbye to carbs, but honestly, it was the best choice I have ever made. Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Check with your doctor

Please consult your doctor first. Every individual has different needs. Doctors can help make sure this diet is healthy for you.

Do Your Research

When I first started I felt like I was thrown overboard. Do your research. Read blogs. Follow pinterest boards. Keto has a super supportive community that will happily answer questions. Use them to help you learn more and more!

Find An Affordable Local Produce Store

Eating healthy can be expensive and starting a new diet probably means you will have to change out your fridge and pantry. Find a local store that has good prices and good product. My personal favorite is Aldi's but people also find good stuff at places like Walmart, Harris Tetter, etc.

Feed Yo'self

Eat. Like really. Eat. On this diet, you can eat as much fat as your body needs. Just don't go too overboard. Eating is important. Your body needs fuel.

Keep Almonds Or Cheese Around As A Snack

If you check out some blogs you will likely see the term Keto flu and let me tell you, it is real. When your body is adjusting to the diet, you will have some growing pains. You may be tired, nauseous, lightheaded etc. Every body is different. Make sure you are eating and drinking plenty of water to get you through. It helps. I promise.

Don't Immediately Give Up

Starting Keto is hard. Like real hard. But the benefits are amazing. Keep trying and keep an open mind. You may just fall in love with it.

Listen To Your Body

The human body is awesome. Listen to it. Keto made me realize I had been mistreating my body for years. I feel much happier and healthier now. If your body says it is hungry, eat a healthy snack. If you are tired, make sure you are getting rest. Stay in tune with what your body needs.

Build A Strong Support Group

When I started this diet, my husband did it with me (and still is). Him motivating me was what made me stick with it. Find a friend or group of friends who support you working to become happier and healthier and lean on them for support. Maybe it is them smacking your hand when you reach for bread or maybe it is them helping you bake no carb bread. Support can be a life changer.

Stay Positive

Giving up carbs can be hard, but it can also be life-changing. Stay positive on your journey. I have just started my own. And maybe, Keto isn't for you. You can still be proud that you are working towards a happier healthier you!

Keto is a major life change, but for me, it was a godsend. I feel healthier. I feel happier. And I look forward to continuing my journey no matter where it takes me.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
